We live in Mammoth Lakes and are in the wilderness almost every day. Whether it’s avalanches, thunderstorms, or something else, the risk and beauty go hand in hand out there.
We got different advice from different rangers. One ranger on the phone told us to hike out. Another ranger on the ground tried driving out and told others to follow of she didn’t return.
The opportunity cost of trying to drive out was low. The fire’s eastward progress was slow so the hike out would still be there.
You're excited about working as a ski instructor. You should absolutely do it.
Now is the time. You have your health and personal freedom. You may have less of these things in the future.

I left my job at 25 to through hike the Continental Divide Trail and couldn't be happier with the decision. Many of my friends are ski instructors, outdoor educators, climbing guides, etc and they couldn't be happier with their decisions. Many of us have found enjoyable, meaningful, and well-paying jobs in the outdoor rec industry as we've established ourselves.

This has been on my mind through internships at several major silicon valley social networking companies. There's a line of thinking in the industry that, when revenue is driven by ad impressions, driving more interactions with your product is the highest goal. This means two things: getting more users (fine) and driving more interactions per user (dangerous).
I have a strong reason to suspect that this was written by an intern who was relatively new to the language. It seems to be written by someone in the C/C++/Java mindset (ie how they didn't list "function" as a primitive data type)
Lets start with a simple case: Imagine there are two parallel wires with current flowing in opposite directions. There are roughly the same number of electrons and protons in each wire but the electrons, unlike the protons, are in motion. Now, imagine you ARE an electron whizzing down one of those wires. If you look around, you'll see all the other electrons in your wire are (more or less) stationary relative to you but the protons are moving backwards at a great speed. Now, you look over to the other parallel wire. Over there, the protons are moving at the same speed and in the same direction as the protons in your wire but the electrons in the other wire appear to be moving backwards twice as fast! In any interval of time, you pass twice as many electrons as you do protons. Because opposite charges attract, this produces an attractive force that we label "magnetism."

As a web developer who specializes in JavaScript, I'm really thrilled -- but as a person who reads books, I'm a little worried. What does the iTunes approval process for iBooks look like? Will any kind of HIG be enforced on the books? Do book publishers have good taste in interactivity? If I wanted interactivity, I would go to the internet.
