I have lots of old books that aren’t very good. That I can’t give away. What do I do with them? I have this strange taboo feeling about destroying books, even bad ones!
My main issue was it was bricked. I had given up on it and then just got an email out of the blue. Just because I bought direct from them I guess.
They didn’t demand any proof or that I send the device back or anything. They just gave me the money which due to exchange rate fluctuations actual turned a profit!
How’s this for a working theory. Economic actors that were established doing the “easy stuff” that got displaced first got a head start on everyone else and started low balling on the harder stuff and that’s why we’re seeing impacts in the parts of the economy that aren’t being directly hit by AI. It could explain why people who know stuff are finding themselves squeezed for cost in every direction even though their specific area defies automation. There is a latency at play here while all the corner cutting of the cost based competitors mount. Not sure what is the outcome when the inevitable correction kicks in but the economic impact will be long lasting as skilled workers leave the industry and we are left with decades of slop to clean up.
If you can call being an “also ran” in a field they had a ten year march on their competitors in success, yeah.
Truth be told it was the shoddy code they were forced to use for the vanity of their paymaster might well have held them back, though manifestly that is not a bad thing. Probably the best outcome, really.
