IIRC, from back when I worked there, they had to name it windows subsystem for linux instead of linux subsystem for windows because there was a copyright problem with putting a term that is copyrighted by someone else (linux) first.
The problem is that it’s already commodified; there’s no moat. The general tech practice has been capture the market by burning vc money, then jack up prices to profit. All these companies are burning billions to generate a new model and users have already proven there is no brand loyalty. They just hop to the new one when it comes out. So no one can corner the market and when the VC money runs out they’ll have to jack up prices so much that they’ll kill their market
Ok, this is going to be a bit of a rant because the impact of quantum computing is actually REALLY misunderstood. The first and most important thing to know about quantum computers is that they do NOT speed up computers. It's not an "extra bit" or "all values at once" as people think. The impact of quantum computers is the speed up of around 40 algorithms that can take advantage of quantum superposition. It is NOT just a speed up for all computers in everything and it is NOT going to magically make AI happen.
The biggest impact of quantum computing comes from cybersecurity and the discrete log and integer factorization problem. This is the foundation for asymmetric keys, the foundation of encryption. These problems currently run in super polynomial time, meaning it is essentially impossible to crack. HOWEVER, Shor's algorithm accomplishes this in polynomial time, making it incredibly easy to break keys.
By the way, even though quantum computers do speed up around 40 algorithms, it doesn't even speed them up that much. Shor's algorithm is one of the few that actually makes a massive speed increase.
So, will quantum computers cause major problems? Yes. Will they make computers able to instantly compute anything? No. Until more quantum algorithms are discovered, quantum computing is not massively useful. People are investing in it so heavily with the assumption/hope that useful quantum algorithms will be discovered. But currently, they are little more than super expensive computers with a few incredibly useful speedups.
I've been taking a class recently about how terrorists use the internet/social media to spread their ideals. One of the biggest issues with actually cracking down on this is that it takes a lot longer for you to find them and shut them down than it does for them to create another account.
This become infinitely more difficult depending on the medium. Computers are really fast at matching strings and searching for keywords. Image recognition, on the other hand, takes a lot longer and video analysis even longer. My hope is that machine learning will develop to the point where it can be quick and effective enough to identify and remove content.
The biggest problem with all of this boils down to the freedom of the Internet. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Internet is bad. I love the freedom it provides, and don't think it should change. But it poses large problems that allow it to be abused and society has to move at the speed of its slowest, evilest people.
