I am firmly in GP's camp, but I think this difference has more to do with introverted vs extroverted personality types than weird vs. not weird perspectives. Some people find it hard to express themselves in group environment because group environments tend to be highly competitive for 'air time', at which introverts are at a great disadvantage.
Completely agree with you. My point was that for the majority of workplaces, the choice of introducing or not such invasive tracking tech belongs to the employer. Employees sadly (at least to me) may not have much say in it if Meta puts together a convincing platform for employers.
Not to say that Metaverse will necessarily fit the bill, but the question is whether your boss will be interested enough in getting Facebook level stalking power into their employees working day, me thinks.
Could it be just that producing relevant recommendation for every one at all times is a complicated problem that gets even more complicated as the volume of uploaded videos continually increases and SEO tactics get ever more sophisticated? Maybe what worked a few years ago is no longer cutting it and they have yet to figure it?

Even though he is a founder, he kind of gave up part of his right of not having to justify anything on the day the company went public. And not by that much for that matter, as he seems to have a disproportionate voting right compared to other shareholders, and can still do pretty much what he pleases even after stepping down as a CEO. There is an option to be completely free from Wall Street's vagaries, and it's called not going public. Once you have taken in investors money, it seems fair to me to have to be accountable to them. The anomaly seems to me to be the other way round here, that people who put their money into the company and undeniably contributed to the company getting to where it is now have pretty much no say on how it should be managed. This lack of accountability might be one of the reasons why poor decision making went on unchecked and led to the current situation.

This is not to say that there isn't lot of corruption and nepotism that one needs to fight against in order to setup a business there, but this is the first time I hear about bank employees stealing money from private accounts. The situation down here is pretty bad, but not that bad.

Also current refugee crisis in Europe is caused to a large extent by people fleeing political crisis in the middle east, a significantly wealthier region than Africa. The trickle of african migrants that was reaching Europe illegally via the mediterranean has always been overly exaggerated numbers-wise. It's a sad reality for those who see no option but to risk their lives that way, but I doubt Europe will ever have anything to fear from boat immigrants from Africa like you seem to suggest.
It would be cool to have a map showing what stack/language is most marketable in what area, so that one can adjust time spent on learning new tools depending on where they want to go. But maybe these things evolve faster than the time scale involved in getting enough experience to be attractive for employers.
I am surprised you mention Africa as a potential flash point. Can you be more specific? I would have thought the middle east and the Korean peninsula would be top candidates for globalized conflict. Most of the crisis in Africa seem to be very local in scope in comparison.

Just wanted to to add to untitled's comment: electron-on-proton collisions are still being done at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA. It just doesn't get as much press as CERN with its impressive PR machine (which I have nothing against). The motivation is the same as at HERA: understand the structure of protons, with the added possibility of polarizing the electron beam or the proton target, which allows to access components of the nucleon structure that are otherwise not accessible. As a bonus, they also have photon beams that collide with proton target exciting different interaction channels.
To come back to gp's question, one can in principle collide anything with anything, but the ideal tool really depends on what one wants to study. Attaining ever higher energy is not necessarily the ultimate goal. Even though it is useful to explore new boundaries, there are also a lot of unanswered questions that can be addressed with much lower energy collisions. For example the Jefferson Lab beam maxes out at 12 GeV, orders of magnitude lower than that available at the LHC, but it's still an extremely useful machine.
Also the comment quoted by gp from the article is wrong. Even though only the protons respond to the electromagnetic fields of the accelerator, the whole nucleus is accelerated. Therefore if the pairs of protons attain a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, the same holds true for the neutrons, because (1) neutrons have very similar mass as protons (2) neutrons are dragged along for the ride, as they are bound to the protons by a force that is much much stronger than that of the electromagnetic forces involved in acceleration. (It is not true that only protons are accelerated). So the available energy per pair of colliding nucleon (whether it is proton or neutron) is still 13TeV, and the total energy potentially available in the center-of-mass system is 13 TeV * 208 = 2.704 PeV. However, not all of it necessarily released, since the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions that can take place is dependent on the area overlap between the two.
I know you're making a bigger point, but just in case you are still wondering: have you tried to touch the highlighted satellite option again to unhighlight it? Some of the items in that menu enable and disable layers. Satellite is one such layer. Keep in mind that some of the layers are mutually exclusive, so you can't have public transport layer and traffic layer, which probably makes sense as it avoids cluttering by layers which are rarely needed simultaneously. This was confusing to me until I got a hang of it. This has been the case on Android for a while, but I have never tried the iOS app, so its behavior may be different. Besides that, I get your pain about pins being dropped whenever the map is touched (or clicked on desktop) to get rid of drop-downs and menus.
There was also the fact that silicon was already heavily entrenched in the industry by the time people started to tinker with the possibilities of GaAs seriously. At least that's what I understood to be the main factor after listening to Seymour Cray's talk which was posted here some time ago:
