I'm impressesed by the initial performance numbers, the price, PCIe 5.0, Having 8 lanes to the PCH instead of 4, 10gbe on most motherboards. It's good that AMD is continueing the trend where users don't have to upgrade their motherboards every generation.
The main catch is DDR5 being expensive and compatability issues with four DIMMS[0]/ teething issues.
(Personally, I wish AMD released a 5900X/ 5950X with 3D V-Cache. The 5800X3D is nice, but I also need cores.)
It's good that AMD doubled the lanes on the PCH as 4 was a real limit (some of the higher-end motherboards have 3xM.2s plus Wifi etc hanging off the PCH, so definately a bottleneck).
The lack of airflow is probably to limit coil whine.
I think the main fault with X570 is that it doesn't save power at idle (PCIe supports downclocking links to save power, actually hot-swappable), but it appears to run all the lanes at full speed. Going from a Intel 6700K to AMD 3950X double the power draw at idle (50 watts to 90+) and that's with the same components.
On my system the chipset will quickly heat to 57c (when the fan starts) within two minutes regardless of usage. I swear Asus have the cooler upside down (semi-passive heatsink blows air downwards), worse still it ingests warm are from the heatsink. I have been meaning to modify it, right now I have a 140mm fan pointing at it to stop it hitting 1500rpm (where it irritates me).
Chasing silence does have diminishing returns. Manually setting the 3950X to 3.6ghz 0.95 volts does make a massive difference. I could run the PC semi passive (no case fans, just CPU <500rpm) if it wasn't for the damn PCH fan!
AMD also sets the voltage too high for their GPUs, making them actually run slower (the one-click downvolt works well), I think AMD dislikes the planet...

It's interesting how woman weren't affected, but I am all too aware of the link between smoking and lung cancer as the two go hand in hand. My father died of lung cancer and we didn't part on the best of terms as he had a bad cough for a over a decade before being diagnosed, I lacked sympathy as it was virtually a given. Seeing patients needing to go outside to smoke (often with an IV attached) as they are dying is something I'll never get my head. I would name it the Darwin ward, but that is probably insensitive... It makes me angry that medics won't even condon, let along recommend smokers switch to vaping due to politics. They could save 100,000's of lives per year in the US alone (480k smokers die per year).
As far as I'm aware it's only B vitamins that aren't toxic in high volumes. I take 1,500ug of B12 (60,000% nrv - B12 has fairly poor adoption) for a nervous system disorder, seems to stops my toes going purple...
A lot of buildings used in rural areas definitely aren't aesthetic pleasing, massive industrial buildings where the primary concern is build cost. They provide jobs to the region so people treat it as a necessary evil. People need jobs but power just comes out of the wall... Then can generate it elsewhere (not in my back yard), that's what I believe the primary issue is. Wind turbines also work better on hill and where the surrounding area isn't obstructed, so by definition they're a little tricky to hide.
What I've always found odd is how windmills are loved and wind turbines are hated. Maybe tell people they're windmills?
But in all seriousness, power generation is something that isn't discussed as much as it needs to be. Electric vehicles are coming fast (fuel prices are surprisingly low right now, but it never stays that way..) and when you consider the number of vehicles about, that will take quite a bit of power (or Angry Pixies as a certain Youtuber would say). Energy does have a cost to the environment (there isn't an easyway around that), but it also has a cost to the economy, there's no simple answer which is why I think it isn't discussed enough. I'm pro nuclear, on a renewable energy tariff and I'd argue natural gas makes a lot of sense in the UK - That's just my answer.
How did the article not mention extension methods, when that's arguably the only true use case (many are against such methods).
I'm a big C# fan, I like a lot about the language, but the inheritance is especially cumbersome and it can become a minefield for the uninitiated. It's only something you avoid when you have tripped by it. The biggest minefield is when using them in initializers, but I'm pretty sure the compilar has displayed warning for sometime and I believe Resharper has had it forever (.net 3.5?).
The only legitimate uses of 'this' is when is when using indexers and when using 'this' as the first parameter in extension methods. Nothing else springs to mind, and as mentioned above, 'base' should normally be used in indexors.
However, there are times when I have used it for readability (which could be considered as an antipattern). I guess this is an example of why languages become so complex. Semantic sugar everywhere (it's addictive!)
What strikes me as odd (aside from the massive shockwave), is how there were no fireballs, all other fertilizer fires have bright explosions. It's burnt rather than detonated. Here, all of the fertilizer ignited faster than the speed of sound (resulting in a virtually perfect spherical shockwave). Although the shockwave could have doused any flames, so that idea is plausible..
The other anomaly is the deep red smoke, that's something that seems unusual too (aside from storing so much fertilizer in such a built up area for so long). This is a disaster on so many levels, but then when is a disaster only caused by a single issue?
I get the intention, and if it wasn't obvious in my previous post; I have dyslexia. Font sizing on computer screens is complex, fonts don't scale perfectly, they have sweet spots where line thickness spills over. When you configure ClearType on Windows it's quite evident where curtain parts of curtain words spill over (a similar fashion to Open Dyslexic actually). Looking at different sized text, it's the line thickness that aids readability rather than the size of the font.
I pretty sure this is the basis of why serif fonts aren't as readable on computer displays, the serifs add more noise rather than help.
That font is hideous! It only extenuates the bottom of the text, especially on capitals which don't need enhancing because they're already in CAPS. Paragraphs of text in caps just become noise, blocks of letters rather than words.
That font also looks like the top of the line has been rubbed off, making things far worse as the top of the text has cues to recognise words. I believe that's my issue with caps as it makes words hard to read as I see blocks of letters, not words.
The biggest change I make the text easier to read is to increase the font size a couple of points or zoom in a little (ctrl + mouse wheel/ +-). Right now hacker news is at 150% zoom (snapped to the left side of a 43" 4K monitor).
Also, I prefer not use windows scaling as it wastes a lot of pixels with bigger menu bars (my eyesight is fine). One more thing... I'm very particular about the screen brightness (there's an app called clickMonitorDDC that let's you change screen brightness from mouse wheel or keyboard (crtl+shift+ up/ down)), and blue light filter at night. I find I can focus better in the evening/ night but I believe that's more of an ADHD thing.
Did Tik Tok even explain why they were capturing and transmitting clipboard contents? (unfortunately not the only ones doing it) It's a little like inviting someone round for dinner and catching them routing through you things taking photos. They should probably be blocked and not invited around again.
I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned GDPR. Yes, it was a huge amount of hassle and a lot of work (inspiring many memes). However, it did make people realise how much of their data was being used.
GDPR's implementation was pretty poor. Like how every website is legally required to tell users they use cookies, which is pretty redundant as there are many ways to track users and cookies are just one of them. It made very little difference to likes of Google and Facebook, who know where you are, who your friends and colleagues are what you like, what you like to buy and even what you are thinking at times - now that scares me!
GDPR had a lot of potential but it has been lost in it's current form. Cookie warnings seem like something a politician would do, not something someone with any real understanding of data security. Very little has changed especially for the big players. Hell Google Chrome was recently caught collecting data when in incognito mode. A Google spokesman stated "Incognito mode in Chrome gives you the choice to browse the internet without your activity being saved to your browser or device" - that doesn't make it ok to collect the information and send it to themselves. It's pretty deceptive and this is recently, long after GDPR was introduced.
PS: The comparison to the East India Company (EIC) is a good one. The CCP is very much like the EIC (ironically it was the EIC supplying the opium for the opium wars). They have their own military, have a huge amount of power politically, openingly admits to using underhand tactics and breaking laws to enforce monopolies, as they are virtually untouchable.
I'm quite interested in what Nvidia is planning. Nvidia purchased Mellanox last year (they make high-end network gear often used in compute clusters). Nvidia is very involved in machine learning with their GPUs. The only missing part of puzzle is CPUs which was either Intel or AMD (a direct competitor). ARM changes things and means they're not dependant on those companies (and the x86 licensing clusterfcuk preventing newcomers), and they have some room to tailor it to fit their needs (like Amazon & Google recently).
These definitely are exciting times. Most Brits born in the 80's and 90's will have used Acorn computers in school, no one predicted that what would grow out of it (they weren't particularly fast).

That treats all numbers as decimals (double) as Javascript treats all numbers that way. If you need to parse integers only, or even only positive integers, bit shifting is the only way to fly (bonus points for SIMD).
One detail the author didn't go into was cache latency and branching. I can't find the numbers right now, but to get sub nanosecond is impressive. I can't find the numbers right now, off the top of my head: L1 is ~1ns, L2 ~4ns, L3 ~8ns (the L3 cache on Ryzen 3900x & 3950x is 64MB! in 8MB clusters with 3-4 cores), and main memory is around 80ns (let's not get into memory ranking). So to get down to those speeds you cannot afford ANY branching, and have to do operations in parallel.
And I didn't mention localisation with some Europeans using commas instead of periods and periods instead of commas - madness!
