Is there a reason dependency management happens like this? We currently deploy Go Lambda functions in AWS with the help of the Serverless Framework and it just uploads the cross compiled Binary and not the whole project.
Why wouldn't the binary be the deployed unit in this case?
Heuristics like data volume are a good starting point, but also known good traffic flow is important to know. In a "secure" environment you'd route all traffic through a know choke-point that is network controlled. In AWS this would be using the routing layer of the VPC to force traffic to something like a Squid proxy before allowing it out.
On that proxy outbound traffic destination host or IPs would be compared to a list of known destination, and rejected if not match is found.
These methods are not 100%, but they do help add another layer to the security process.
Hi, thanks for the great write up. Can you provide some more details about how you handle the RDS side of the rotation process and maintaining the spares?
I'd imagine that the move would require some re-engineering of their services to make the best use of GCP. I'd also imagine that their would be a non-trivial migration process to ensure uptime is maintained and customers are not impacted during the move.
In AWS the combination of IAM roles + Param store gives us a pretty decent version of this. We have the app talk to param store to get secrets then just keeps them in memory.
