Personal phone -> A feature phone
Business phone -> Smartphone if you're in primarily customer-facing role(e.g. sales, customer support)
My Story:
3 years back, I gave away my smartphone and switched to a simple feature phone. I had to get a smartphone for a duration of 6 months in between this period(when a lot of my day job couldn't be finished without accessing whatsapp groups/messages and travelling)
For my job as a programmer/founder, I prefer no smartphone at all and use following formula
1. For Personal Use: phone on feature phone
2. For Business Use: iPad with only business whatsapp, toto app, book reading app(and that too only when I am not able to lure any other team member to handle it for me)
Location services, cabs, all these things can be handled without smartphone. Although, it takes little longer and inconvenience but also gives an opportunity to live in the moment, ask people for help.
I had the similar situation, I was so immersed on one of the side project that I couldn't sleep at nights thinking about the future prospects for this project. I could no longer focus on my employer's work. At the same time, I did not have enough conviction to pursue the side project full time without salary.
I told my boss everything honestly. We discussed that it would be better for the company and myself that I take 1 month break from job and work on the side project; then decide whether to pursue the side project or the job with full focus.
I got the momentum in the project, so I chose to pursue this project full time and left the company. Couldn't have been possible without an understanding boss and an honest conversation.
Is there any javascript library to do the same?
It would be useful to have a library as a dependency and just initialize it in the code and then you have screenshot in meta of each page
Unpopular opinion: I have seen this happening frequently for all the "freelancers" I know. They deal with multiple clients, multiple projects, multiple categories of work.
Have you thought of organizing the way you're doing business? Probably focus on more niche field. Cut down your clients, cut down your projects and focus on fewer.
Remember 80/20 principle? Ask yourself what gives you the most output and then remove everything else from your life?
I have done all of them and from your comments it seems you start to like Cordova, means you are interested in cross platform release. Anyway, I recommend to read this first
My Background:
Coming from Java backend experience, I built multiple android apps(native Android), tried react native and then learned Flutter. I also outsourced two apps and successfully got it done in react native.
My Advice:
1. Do it yourself if you want to really learn mobile development.
I recommend to explore Flutter(cross-platform and similar to Java), try to build a sample app in a day or two. Whether you succeed or not, ask yourself, how do you feel now, would you want to learn and code yourself? Remember, it is going to take a lot more time than you estimate now(when I learnt Android first, I estimated a week to learn and years after, I'm still learning, I shipped my first decent app after 4 months, while working on backend parallely)
2. If the answer is No to all above questions
Outsource the work. How?
A. Do you know any friend who'd want to do this?
B. Hire a developer on hourly basis to work with you closely and ofcourse remotely. Where? Invide or Toptal.
Few tips for successful outsourcing
- Do not go for upwork or freelancer or project basis work
- Teamwork is key, hire someone who's a team player
- Have weekly call to discuss progress with the dev. Discuss things other than the project as well, build relationship. Transaction based approach does not work.
- Think how can you make it easy for the other person to understand. Can you get every minute screen detail designed via a designer and hand it over to the dev?
I find it odd to limit ourselves to the structure of 4-day workweek or 40hr work-week
I utilize all 7 days to work on my professional & personal projects
To do everything sustain-ably and optimize output, for some projects, I dedicate couple of hrs for 4 days and for some only a day and for some everyday.
How you time-box your work for maximum potential is a personal discovery and the strategies vary based on the person, environment and the nature of the project.
So if we are talking about weeks, I have 7 days to get things done which are important in my life and I will neither follow 40hr work-week not 4-days a week. I will see the project, where it stands against all things in life, put it somewhere in my 7 day schedule, see if this schedule works and go ahead with the learnings each week.
