Great post! Reminded me of ‘The art of game design - A book of lenses’
The first lens, author talks about is ‘lens of emotions’ and mentions that — while designing games emotions like ‘frustration’ and ‘fear’ play an important role in defining a users’ experience.
1. Look at things in entirety--from end-to-end, when you see the complete picture, it becomes much easier to grasp anything.
2. Research matters A LOT. I remember an incident where my Design lead called us all into a room (about 12 people.) He gave each one of us a chocolate--none were of the same kind. Then, he asked, "how many of you don't like what you got" Couple of us raised our hands. He then said, "go ahead and exchange it with someone"--people unhappy with their chocolates exchanged. Once everyone was done, He asked the same question again. This time only one person who did not like the chocolate raised their hand. Then he said "Welcome to user research 101" -- The biggest mistake companies make today, is shovelling down what they think is right onto their users, just like I did. Now, when you guys exchanged and got what you wanted it just goes onto show that it's not like you don't like chocolates, it's just that you wanted a different kind. About the one who did not like anything, he asked her why--She said, she doesn't like chocolates; for this he said--well, there also are people, who don't want your product at all!
These two have really helped me understand things better.
TLDR: Its a mystery to me. I don’t know where HN is sending this from!
This is how my workflow looks like if ‘top story on HN’ then ‘slack me’ Now when I created this workflow, I was expecting to get results when something hits the front page-top news but what I saw was—it giving me news with even 2 upvotes sometimes and that thing wasn’t even there on the first page. Honestly it’s a mystery to me. In fact I even tried comparing ‘new section’ with the results I was receiving and they didn’t match! You can check this on IFTTT hackernews just select top news when creating your workflow. Also what I realized was these news hit the top section a while later the notifications-not all but a lot.
Not sure about the API, I just used whatever was currently available. I am sure there might be someplace on IFTTTs api - https://platform.ifttt.com/docs this may be a good place to start.
I created an IFTTT workflow. Whenever there is a post that's gaining traction on Hackernews I get a notification on my Slack. I use some Slack features to remind me of it later if i am busy, also Pin somethings or Star.
