There's really no need for the comparisons. Both versions are terrible, who cares which is worse. How we go about fixing it should be the topic of discussion.
I've done this once, in one of the tanks with a latch described. It's interesting, sure, but its also really uncomfortable in there. The air is super humid and thick, it's almost difficult to breathe. I'm not ever claustrophobic, but I had fleeting nervous thoughts of being stuck in there. Overall I'm happy I did it once, but I don't think I'm willing to pay the price to do that to myself very often.
What difference does it make if the cause is entirely man made or not. Should we let 80% of worlds population who live on the coast just deal with rising sea levels, because it natural? Do you really need to know it's causing a rise in temperature to want less trucks and cars polluting the air in your city? Or does the fact that we will never have the historic data to know for sure if humans are causing global warming, make it okay to ignore the issue entirely, forever?
I'd like to see how the general population changed in the same time, then maybe a revision of this graph keeping it in perspective of how the rest of the population changed.
based on how misinformed the author was in general on the subject, I think its more likely the site dropped off the first few pages of results. Since it still came up when you search for the domain, it can't be deindexed.
Mr. Cringely might start helping his sister by removing the completely unrelated link to his sister's site from his own, or at least mark it "nofollow".
It's really interesting reading the rantings of the grossly misinformed, especially when they are able to dismiss the entire industry of search engine optimization as "bullshit". I bet if the tone of his article was different, he would have dozens of SEOs willing to diagnose the problem and giving tips on how to fix the issues. Oh well, maybe he should get in tighter with Eric Schmidt, so he can personally take a look at the writer's wife's photo pillow website.

Relying on another company for all your business isn't a sound business strategy. The person in the article put all their eggs in one basket and this is the result.
With Earth-like planets being discovered in far off star systems and HD cameras roving about on Mars, it's easy to forget how much of our own solar system is still an unexplored frontier. It may not be a ground breaking discovery, but the fact that there are Moons we haven't found as of yet, is really exciting to me!
Google personalizes results quite extensively these days, largely based on your location. Google believes based on that, and probably your previous searching and browsing habits, that those .co.uk sites are more relevant to your interests. After all, this is the company that has patented and is developing the idea of "Parameterless Searches", where they assume what you want to know before you even ask... No, not if they're all the same website. Take 3 comment pages on hacker news, for example, you'd have to look around the page for context to know which was which if you had several open at once.
These guys have created a new project for creating a bitcoin mining box. Unfortunately, it's vaporware, just like the last project they used to make off with 196 thousand dollars.
I've watched that website launch and develop with some interest. Without disclosing any particulars, does the site do well for him? I imagined he was raking in the dough, but if he's still your co-worker I guess that's not the case?
Yes, this was my main point here. It's difficult to get that across without writing an entire article for context, and now that ycombinator mods have edited the title its even less clear.
The founders of this project did little more than sign on once in a while to say "its not ready yet, but should be ready soon". Now they've disappeared and there's no accountability for all that money. As an investor, I would at least like to learn from this experience and see where it went wrong and what could have done better. Instead the only lesson I can take away from this is don't trust strangers on the internet.
Unfortunately, this project creator hasn't provided any proof that the money was spent working on the product. If there were photos and records of work and progress being attempted, and at least some communication with the backers along the way, I suspect the tone and deposition of the comments would be different.
It's a lot to read through, but there's pages of people just asking for transparency to see the status and to understand what challenges were coming up. There's just as many comments from the creator that things are going great and we should be ready to ship in no time at all.
Trying out a new project or product and failing is one thing, never attempting it and running off with the cash is a different matter entirely.
This project has been funded for a year and half with no progress to show for it, only thousands of comments from backers wondering when they will receive a refund or at least an update on whats going on.
Unfortunately the project founder has flown the coop and kickstarter doesn't claim a lick of responsibility. Want to get away with stealing 200k? Just make a kickstarter project and never deliver, it's working for these guys.
