I find that it is of little help to look at these big problems in terms of individual intentions. In the end the underlying problems are widespread social circumstances that need to be fixed. The human nature impersonations, the evil people with agendas are just symptoms.
All I see is a company that is corrupting the go to free software ecosystem with proprietary software and walled gardens. And worst of all it is targeted at a mostly young demographic that might end up growing up in a world where having a Steam walled garden on your Linux box is the norm. I'd rather kids keep gaming on their Windows partition and dual booting.
I also don't think the blow to Microsoft Windows will be all that big that it would be a win for free software. Their strong hold is in the corporate and education sectors not in the PC gaming industry.
