imo it's not a great solution. the problem is there is no standard or source of truth for zip code boundaries because they are a usps concept used for mail logistics. zip codes change all the time, are approximations of an area, and generally shouldn't be used for something that requires precision like calculating rates. may be ok to use as a fallback though.
also i hear your point on swe roles and don't disagree
it had created a config file in my home dir and i asked it to move it to the project folder and apparently it thought deleting the entire home dir first was necessary? not sure because after my home folder was gone things started disappearing lol
Also consider the speed of light is also the speed of causality. If there was no such limit it means it would be possible for effects to precede causes which would lead to a very different kind of universe!
the way i'm thinking about it: could apple be the size it is today, in terms of market cap and or influence, being strictly ran in "founder mode"? i'm even skeptical steve jobs could have taken it here.
that's not to say the goal should always be to scale or become as big as possible, but it's interesting to think about.
hot take: i find it a little irresponsible he put this out there without properly defining it / expanding on how it should be implemented. i already see people on twitter construing the concept to however they see fit.
I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do.. but these toads (like the Sonoran desert toad) are increasingly becoming endangered due to poaching. It is possible to milk the venom without harming them, but a lot of poachers aren't careful or use the wrong techniques.
I also understand people believe that there is a qualitative difference between the venom and synthetic, but it's the same compound at the end of the day.
Sam Altman talked a little bit about this in his recent appearance on the All-In podcast [0]. I'm paraphrasing, but his vision is that ai assistants in the near term will be like a senior level employee - they'll push back when it makes sense to and not just be sycophants.
It's possible other types of music are sometimes played, but I've never personally seen it. Usually you can see where the VGM comes from scrolling at the top of the stream.
Also, zoasty explains in the pastebin that he had a lot of help setting hoot up, so I don't think the expectation is for others to be able to easily recreate what he did.
I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the article but there has been some research on the therapeutic benefits of non-hallucinogenic ibogaine analog, tabernathelog (TBG) which is also supposed remove negative cardiovascular side effects.
Cost savings was definitely a factor, but this is the key point from the article:
"And yet, until very recently, Lyft had limited control over that navigation experience, which was built using Google Maps.
“For our entire existence, we couldn’t fundamentally change that product,” says director of project management Ben Schrom."
I've worked in the mapping space for more than 20 years and I can tell you one of the biggest annoyances with using third party mapping data is that you are beholden to their cadence and tooling for making updates to the map - you have virtually no control over the data. This is a big reason both Google and Apple built their own map.
The benefit of using OSM is that you are provided decent tooling and a relatively streamlined process for making updates. Map data quality is incredibly important, especially for navigation and it's really hard to manage because the map is always changing - it's not a static thing.
