An attack on PG drives the presentation of the research because the blog post comes verbatim from a larger blog post which criticizes tech blogging in general and several tech bloggers specifically.
I piled on some research as I was going, and anticipate referring to it in the near future, so I copied and pasted that section into its own blog post. That got me hosting for free, and I don't have to remember where I left my research notes, since Google will remember it for me.
Since people are discussing it, though, you can see this blog post about content as an extension of my criticism of HN in 2008, which is that the registration requirement, and incentives of the karma systems, for all sites of this nature, make groupthink inevitable.
Sensationalistic presentation aside, my research indicates it may be possible to make a very significant income with very, very little upfront investment. My post points to plenty of evidence, also provides anecdotal evidence, and also tells you what to google if you would like to turn up more evidence (including evidence which Hacker News has already been discussing in the past).
I think the fact that this research does not seem to excite the Hacker News user base demonstrates the groupthink that I warned about in 2008. I believe whoever posted this on Hacker News showed a group of would-be entrepreneurs signs of lucrative opportunity, and that group chose to only discuss footnotes and grammar in response.
Re grammar, "raises the question" is the correct usage. The footnotes argument is invalid, however. This is an excerpt from a larger post which argues PG's footnoted decision was a bad decision.
I have a different theory. I believe Texas will resist this because Texans have been to New Mexico. Anybody who thinks it's a good idea for the entire US energy system to rest on ANYTHING in New Mexico is out of their freaking minds. I've lived in New Mexico. There was a shootout at a major intersection where the suspect didn't even have a gun. They cornered him, and one of the cops got too excited. He shot at the suspect, cops on the other side thought the suspect was shooting at them, so they shot back, then the other cops figured it was the suspect too and shot back as well. This was at 3pm, a couple blocks away from a school, on the busiest road in the city (Santa Fe). In New Mexico, more cops, judges, and state senators get arrested for drunk driving than anywhere else in the country by a HUGE margin. It isn't a close race. They own the category. I didn't even read the article, I'm just telling you now, ANYBODY who pins major infrastructure on the assumption that anybody who does anything in New Mexico does it competently is just asking for trouble. (The article mentions some crazy plan to build a "superstation" in New Mexico. Like we need centralized energy hubs, in the age of the Internet.)
Either-or is ridiculous. It's a false dichotomy and they're practically the same language. With 11 years of total experience, if you found it impossible to fit Ruby and Python in the same brain, you'd have to be a complete fucking idiot. I understand why newbies a year out of college might consider Ruby vs. Python to be a question at all, but you are not in that position. It's a language. It's good. Go ahead and use it.

hey sho, I appreciate the effort at defending me and all that, but yeah, it was totally a rant. I didn't get as far as the first sentence without mentioning my own balls. I aim for a high standard of rationality in my rants, but a rant is definitely the word.
You people are such idiots. I lost 40 pounds in two months and it was the easiest thing in the world. But most of you won't ever even see these words because I was rude on here too many times and now (from what I hear) they have me on some kind of auto-delete or auto-obscurity or something like that.
Forty pounds in two months, gone, no effort at all. All you have to do is eat natural vegan foods. No meat, no processed food of any kind, no refined grains, no dried fruit. Just natural vegan. That's it. You'll hit your ideal weight in no time and once you get there you won't lose another pound.
Oh also: have sex with as many high school girls as you can. It's great, and it's only legal while you're still in high school too. School will give you a very few things worth learning and a very large number of high school girls you can meet. It's very clear what school is for. If school was for learning, it would give you a few girls to meet and a ton of things to learn. QED. Recognize that school is a terrible place to learn but an excellent place to get laid, and react appropriately. It's especially important for you to socialize when you're at school because it's pretty obvious that in your free time you would rather learn than socialize. You can't stop school from wasting your time, but you do get to choose whether it eats time out of your learning budget or your socializing budget.
I had this exact same experience. You're basically fucked. The whole world is like that and it takes effort and balls to get anything interesting to happen. My advice: ignore school completely, and work on learning the skills you want to learn, and learn them really well and inside out. Also learn business skills, because somebody like you is going to need to operate independently. My advice would be to get a self-sustaining business off the ground as quickly as possible. Learn some scripting languages, work your ass off, and it's OK to flunk out of school. If your parents aren't cool with that, too fucking bad. Here's how you win that fight: set up a self-sustaining business on the Web before you flunk out of school. All you have to do is get the timing right. As long as you're already making enough money to get your own apartment by the time your school flunks you, it won't matter.
As far as I know the only thing that actually improves matters is taking men out of the equation. Females at all-female schools do great in fields like tech.
Also, protip: do not attempt to address a female project manager's sexist assumptions about your female co-worker's programming ability with sarcasm. It backfires very badly.
This just horrifies the ever-living fuck out of me. The cumulative effect of these drugs cannot be good for you. And the guy who considered it an incredible achievement to be able to correlate the idea of harmony as a religious value to the idea of harmony as a political value, it appalls me that anyone considers this to be the sign of a bright person. That's like a kid being proud he can tie his own shoes.
I believe taking LSD made me a better programmer. I'm not going to tell anybody that you shouldn't take risks or explore. However - reading a shit-ton of books on programming probably had more to do with it, and a one-time (or several-time) dramatic shock to the system carries different risks than an ongoing habit. The risk of addiction is an insane risk to take.
I think the question of what the government's policy should be is stupid and irrelevant. Nobody who reads Hacker News has to comply with drug laws. Drug laws only exist for harassing poor people, and everybody who reads this is a child of privilege. The whole point of drug laws is that if you criminalize something everybody does, then you can arrest anyone you want. Taking drug laws literally is a sign of incredible naivete.
But the question, "is it safe?", that's an important question. There's no way in hell substantially altering your neurochemistry on a daily basis with unproven chemicals could be safe over the long term. There's always the chance that it could turn out OK, but there's no way in hell it could be safe. It is inherently risky, and the research necessary to determine just how risky, and what specifically those risks are, would take decades.
Another important question: does it work? Most people who waste their time on this kind of insane bullshit are people who don't get enough sleep and don't know anything about meditation or deep relaxation. I think it'll be a really long god damn time before any pill comes along that can compete with meditation, deep relaxation, and getting enough sleep.
These people are just asking for trouble. And all this bullshit at the end of the article, about, well, what if you're 56 and your competition's a 26-yr-old in Singapore taking cognitive enhancers? That's a good thing. I wish all my competition were inexperienced, naive, drugged to the gills, and incapable of speaking English. That would be fucking fantastic! Of course in an ideal world, my competition would also all be severely mentally retarded, but you can't have everything, and many of them code in Java, which is close enough.
