"If you have the tendency to involuntarily hyperfocus on things, re-consider your interest in flying."
I understand OP talk about a personal opinion but that is really bad advice from falcolas and dghughes, which with a grand total of a few hours of actual flying should have no business at all misleading potential wanabees pilots.
You don't know how to fly with a PPL, yet alone without it during your lessons. You learn flying every day, every minute, every seconds of practice. From zero hours to 30,000.
The truth is "hyperfocus" is a common trait of EVERY baby pilot out there. That is just the way it is, you were not born with flying skills. So you take a few lessons, you fly the plane but you make so much mistake and tend to be overwhelmed, "behind the plane" every time, some can't even manage the radio by themselves before 10 hours. That is expected, that is why there is this guy on your right to teach you how to fly, it's actually a job you know. So, fast forward 100 hours you won't believe what you can achieve with your airplane, but you still does not know anything about flying, just continue to learn. Then there will be this IFR thing when you will be IMC in the soup shouting your first ILS solo to minimum, yes on a Cessna 172 if you want to. This day you will feel overwhelmed once again. This game never end, but this is absolutely the best game around.
"For me, the traits which make me an exceptional developer made me a terrible pilot." Pretty BS statement. Let's forget the "exceptional developer" selfie part, I have the complete opposite experience regarding IT pilots. I would say this very traits is just a great asset for pilots, had falcolas not chickened early on he may have pushed to the IFR part and challenges, he would have discovered a better world than IT.
Just leave your computer and live the life.
Please wanabee pilots, don't listen to chicken talks, anybody can do it, go ahead, take this flight lesson, it will be one of the best time of your life !
" That's assuming tax revenue remains the same, which ALL economists agree will not be the case. "
Jesus, am I reading this ? Talk about a bubble. You may read other publications than HN to widen your views.
I love when american IT people try to teach nations who were around since more than a thousand year. Really, love it.
Go ahead and tell us EU was a chance for Greece.
Guys, there is more in life that the dollar, there is the people, culture, religions and traditions. Except a bundh of depressed unsocialized hypsters, nobody in his mind is ready to give that away for a global market of consumership, WE DO NOT CARE, WE LIVE. The european way of life is not all about money as the american dream, this is something you'll have to understand for good, and you do not have to impose your materialist vision of the world to every country of this planet, especially with bombs and firing drones.
Oh, are you chasing virtual pets 43 minutes 23 secondes per day in average too ? I'm sorry, really, I should think more positively of the future. My bad, will improve, promess ! Let's start by creating a facebook account, we will learn the pokemon thing after, one benefit per humanity at a time.
I'm all with you for general contempt for people on HN.
I read everyday here the HN crowd claiming urgent need for an elite to set up a globalized centralized European Federal Union to get rid of nations and populism. I see people being bashed and insulted for supporting their own nation and not living for the NYSE.
Let's just throw away states, cultures, religions, and build a global free market where everyone would be happy consumer. Maybe facebook and Jp Morgan can help in this mission.
Let's celebrate the day when everyone will be chasing virtual pets on their phone. We're so in love with the people !
I read people are chasing "pokemon" everywhere. I do not even know what a Pokemon is but I'm pretty sure Descartes would not care.
Reading the press, I understand we may expect to see random people looking in their phone on the street chasing virtual pets.
And still some people complains about the security risk of sharing his google account. Nobody seems to see the big picture. I guess that is the "Idiocracy" future we are being sold every day.
Of course I will never ever chase a virtual pet in the street with my "dumb-phone". But this does raise questions for the future of humanity if hundred thousands of people do.
I am really amazed and frighten everytime I read anything about politics - economics on HN.
So we see all this BS about "work less", "meditation", "how trees calm us down", etc. but in fact when you do read across the lines you only see a crowd of hypsters totally obsessed with economics, money-money-money, free market, productivity, basicaly : materialism as the holy grail.
Allo ? Is there any European in these comments ?
I mean, we all know the USA where a European colony from the XVI century, but the country as it is today seems to be born only 250 years ago, and maybe more acurately with the secession war and the yankees take over. That my friend is just nothing, dust in the wind, in the scale of history.
So we have this bunch of unsocializes nerds IT guys asking for every European nation to give up their own culture and souveirgnty for a centralized Federal State, certainly in the model of the glorious USA, and if possible infeodated to it. What's the next move, maybe get rid of any state currency to go all the way with bs bitcoins ?
France was born in 496 when Clovis was baptized as a catholic. Our history and culture is not about cars, movies, fast foods and Wall Street. Just come and visit to check it out and learn a few things about the history of the world.
There is more than Banking and Wall street and metrics and GDP in life. Actually, let me correct this, these are all the things which are actually not Life. So just respect the right of a nation to exists as it is and to give to her childrend what her parents gave her since centuries.
So Brexit is all in the rage now, great, the world is collapsing, maybe Germany will engage war with UK and laucnh a bunch of V2, who knows ? Bullshit. UK will go fine walking away, much better in fact that France and Germany are right now, our corrupted politics just fear that all the nations figures that sooner or later and ask to leave EU asap.
LET ME REMIND ALL THE HN READERS OF SOMETHING RIGHT NOW : Brexit is no a unique event, some want not to remember that France, Netherlands and Ireland had their own "Brexit" moments and the EU did denied the rights of these people to leave. I urge you to refer to the 2005 french referendum about the EU constitution, who was rejected by the french people, just to have it passed a few month later by the parliament denying any direct democratic right to the nation. That went also in the Netherlands. And they made people of Ireland vote twice, just till they vote what they wanted them to.
Please, do not make Europe another heartless Silicon Bullshit Valley with absolutely no history except the atrocious gold rush and the infamous tech boom. Facebook is not history, let us keep Pascal and Academie Française in lieu of Snapchat and Tinder, if you please, in the name of the french people.
