I hope people give up on this 1950's-era mythological obsession with trying to realize a cartoon's flying saucer pods because of the potential for energy waste/climate change, public hazards and property damage.
Facebook's accumulation of a pattern of making major, surprise changes that are mostly about benefiting money-making, directly or indirectly. Super popular but seemingly more and more terrible as time goes on.
I tried FB in early ~2000's because I had a @stanford email, but after a coworker's wife started tagging people and editorializing randomly, it was clearly more of a liability than value. I had emptied details and most content but kept for some old photos, but finally migrated and purged it this year because it's basically a vehicle of surprise privacy monetization to make Wall St. happy. If a social media service instead were instead subscriber- and donation-supported, it wouldn't develop such perverse incentives to sell-out its users to stay afloat.
Yeap. Emperor's new clothes / Not Invented Here / reinventing the wheel / new is "better" than old - churn / kitchen-sink design-by-committee (cough OpenSSL cough). This happens more and more. Instead of fixing existing infrastructure that has a well-established/proven history, throwing everything away and starting over like what came before never existed. And let's over-engineer it and add every possible feature that we'll never use! It's so new and broken, isn't it awesome!?!
Could've used this 30 years ago when I was forcibly-bused across town to a "magnet" school 1.5 hours in each direction (3 hours of busing total). Getting up a 4:45 am and not getting home until after 6 pm as a pre-teen sucked. The big thing is the route they took was very circuitous and served both many stops and schools.
Certainly, there's too much magical thinking, but what the heck is "hypersane?" Is it an absence of conspiracy theories, foolish beliefs, and word-salad? Maybe giving too much attention to the histrionic, the unreasonable and the crazies is part of the problem.
I would find a better (defensible) business model that's better than a restaurant that anyone can open. ER's have zero intellectual property and anyone can start such a business for little investment. Do something else (hard/er/expensive/tedious for most people) that lends itself to greater monopolization by you, and that's profitable. (Build something defensible and profitable that customers love.)
Manufactured insecurities mutually-reinforced by peer pressure ("Keeping up with the Jones") is often why. Don't do what you don't want to do; don't be pressured into lemmingification. Everyone else can buy absurdly-overpriced conveniences like tiny bottles of water in disposable plastics. Pack your own lunch, take up freeganing and stay away from "luxuries" like recent MacBook Pro's that are overpriced and designed for unrepairability. Opt-out of the new widget competitive upgrading bandwagon and only acquire just what you need, just when you need it and not before. Also, share services that rent things that bleed you but convey no ownership.
I'd like Xfinity unlimited 1 Gbps ISP/unlimited landline/260 channels + Hulu + HBO + Netflix + Amazon Prime + Youtube Red + Spotify for one order of magnitude more. That I could get behind.

On the post, if Linus is referring to low-end Xeon and workstation non-Xeon lacking ECC, I think it's completely idiotic. Nearly all infrastructure should be baking in ECC as standard rather than some "option" to not have silent, unknowable, probabilistic corruption that is realistically realizable on a near-daily basis given the orders of magnitude of network, storage and computational volumes of today (and the future) by ever lower tiers of end-users and common examples of network infrastructure.
I wouldn't read it as a false-dichotomy us/them conclusion, but to the literal facts: Philipines, DRC, US, many countries in Europe are becoming hyperpolarized.. with the intent and aggression being laid down, the only difference is the scale and nakedness of violent acts that result. It's definitely social warfare that's being promulgated with aid of the internet by charlatans and crazies alike.
Yeap. The world is flattening as many countries end their brief (and ever briefer) socioeconomic growth. Happenings in one place become not a first-/third-world disparity, but a near-universal condition. InfoWars hate-radio sparking white nationalist stochastic terrorism here, Rwanda hate-radio sparking genocide there.
There's a lot of homeless people who can't work as-is; the disabled, unsocialized and mentally ill need support and minor accommodations to try to work and to keep it. Some have substance-abuse issues, but not all. There maybe hygiene issues, but at least in the US, the so-called social workers rarely do a very good job in mentoring or preparing people for transitioning to indoor dwelling lifestyle.
Then there are disabled, elderly, poor people.. they need to not be harangued, forced into work or treated like criminals.
There are few, cool sane homeless people who are just poor but don't have the money or support to mythologically-"pull themselves up from their.." children's story "...bootstraps."
