I think I'm totally fine with this. The only issue I can see is whether or not the warrants to hack these servers are justified. Warrants should be issued when there's good reason to suspect criminal activity, and if they're issued to search obviously innocent people then that's wrong, just like all other warranted searches or spying that don't involve computers or hacking.

If you care enough about privacy to sign up for protonmail, why not just learn how to use pgp? It's not perfect, but it works. And... oh goodness, I'm looking at this [support page][1]; If you send encrypted mail to non-protonmail addresses, the recipients have to open the message in a web browser and enter in a password to read it. So instead of exchanging public keys, you have to send them a password, probably over an unencrypted channel. I guess it's easier than asking them to generate a keypair. But if your recipient is too lazy to set up pgp, they're probably going to be just as annoyed at having to open your message in a browser and enter in a password, right? It seems like an awkward compromise.

Instead of raising and lowering a giant heavy desk, why not just get a standing desk and a tall chair that raises and lowers? Eh? No?

It's different! Not being creative isn't the opposite of being cheery. The assumption is that the reader may not see any connection at all between happiness and creativity, and that the association might provide some insight. Though if you're like me and are only happy when you are able to create things, I can see why you would be irked.

This is good to hear. I quit focusing on art (drawing, painting) recently for the same reason. No matter what I'd do I would always end up agonizing over my projects. I hated the process and I almost always hated the result. So I gave up, and now I don't know what I want to do but I don't really care, because at least I don't have to spend all my time thinking about what a terrible artist I am. Oh, and I did this for like five years.

I try to put my hands behind my head when I'm not typing or using the mouse (because otherwise they're always in front of me and my shoulder blades hurt like hell). I switch mouse hands when my shoulder starts to get sore. I work at a standing desk with a stool so I can sit when I need to. And when I'm not working I try to spend as little time in front of a computer as I can. I also do yoga.

Oh yes, Stranger in a Strange Land. I am pleased to find that this Joan Quigley character "was called on by First Lady Nancy Reagan in 1981", twenty years after Heinlein's book was published.

I know lots of people who don't want to get legally married, hate that their lives are built around making money, and can't stand the thought of staying in one place for too long. Traditional adulthood is obviously not very appealing to them, and for good reason. We also aren't too keen on abandoning our childhood dreams, hobbies, and aspirations. Some of them want kids, but having kids tends to make living an alternative lifestyle a lot more difficult. I don't know if any of this has anything to do with patriarchy or feminism, but I suppose the people I surround myself with do hold rather egalitarian views.

I completely understand all the criticism toward this piece, and I don't think I would ever publish anything like this without at least some hard evidence, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he were completely right about his assumptions. Thinking skeptically about everything is a good habit, but sometimes the consequence of thinking like an intelligent reasonable person is that you forget how bafflingly stupid the world can really be.

Are all of the author's suspicions totally unfounded? Yeah, probably, because he has no good evidence to back them up. Do they lead to a narrative that is completely unreasonable and absurd? Absolutely. But it's also possible that the people who are spying on him are behaving in a way that is completely unreasonable and absurd, and are just competent enough to cover their tracks so a layperson won't have any evidence on them.

I don't have a ton of confidence in what I'm saying right now, but uh... I just don't blame him too much, is all. I definitely wouldn't dismiss him as a bad journalist or anything.

I feel like this should be relatively easy to put an end to.

1. Make revenge porn site give up IP address that uploaded the incriminating images; 2. Check to see if victim's ex-boyfriend lives at the street address leasing the IP; 3. Get a warrant to sieze all his computers; 4. Find the images on his hard drive; 5. Convict him

I guess a judge has to figure out what crime he's guilty of, but from that article it sounds like he could be guilty of at least three. It would be harder if the perpetrator was security-conscious, but even private VPN services are required to hand over information if there's evidence of their users engaging in criminal activity, and most of these douchebags don't even know what a VPN is.

He's right that filling every spare moment with compulsive news-checking and fast content consumption is distracting and stressful, but there's no reason he can't apply focus and deliberation to his surfing habits just like he did for other areas of his life. Indulge in the things you enjoy, and when you feel them becoming compulsive, cut back. For me, ditching the web would have a profoundly alienating effect on my psyche.
