It's sold as a service because it drives compute. Compute is one of the top money makers. The more people who buy into things like k8 that are essentially VM deployment launchers the better. The providers aren't emotional about this like 90% of the posters here. If a new flavor of the week gets people to launch VMs next year then that will be sold.

My personal feeling here is I do not care either way. What I care about is from the consumer standpoint that Uber is accountable. My primary dislike of Uber, Airbnb, Vroom or similar enterprises is that they all claim to be of one stripe when things are going well but when things go wrong the company claims "Oh that's not us it is this entity we represented as part of the process but who we disclaim any responsibility for". As others have pointed out all the major tech companies use contractors. I don't know of any that would get away with the "oh that's not really us" defense.

This entire kerfluffle is a microcosm of so many things wrong with the industry. First, so many people have decided to use k8 for wrong reasons that is mind boggling. Those are mainly customers. Customers are often led into decisions by their own developers who are more interested in learning new things or in making themselves attractive for the next job. Yes sales people from the providers also help make this happen but more often than not the customer walks themselves into walls.
The providers hawk shit like it's magic and overstate their capabilities ad nauseum. Everything is sold like fucking magic. AI has been so fucking overhyped that it is mind numbingly hard to even deal with peers who should know better. Because it involves a whole new class of jackasses who specialize in statistics it is being mass introduced into an ecosystem where programmers with years of experience feel out of their depth and are acting like rubes when they're fed pure crap.
Then there is "I want free or cheap" guy. No sympathy. Go to DO or whatever you think is the magical unicorn out. Or, dig in and put up your own damn control plane. Actually learn what the spaghetti hell of k8 is (all things that try to solve hard distributed problems are some level of spaghetti). 90% of free and cheap guy want to work on the next dick pic app so fuck em.

Sorry for technical tangent but curious. Your decision making on GCP appears to appeal to best of breed + cost. But you put SQL Server on AWS? If you are saying SQL Server is better on AWS than on Azure it would be interesting to learn why.
I'm not sure any provider appearing to capitalize on a momentary pricing decision is a great idea. All are too big and things change too fast for any crowing as if anything is a long term decision.

There are a lot of comments from people wanting free things. You may get those things for a while but it won't last. Free only works for so long in anything no matter how hard that is for some people to figure out across all aspects of life.
I think you are saying you want the industry to be better. I support that. But until we get there, the need for people who can airdrop is going to be there. Sometimes you may be dealing with a fortune 50 like customer with lots of $$$ in play or a smaller customer who needs to get something running or they are in deep trouble of going under. If I take your comment to mean collaborating is good and some people are better than others at parts of a solution because they are currently specialized I agree. The "right" answer is often difficult in practice especially when you depend on many other teams as dependencies and need to get something out the door.
On the other hand if you're drawing diagrams of things you haven't personally made sure could work well together at even a trivial POC level then I am not a fan because that is precisely why some devs hate anyone who is called an Architect.
A1) Your typical mega corp that is too big to be one thing and filled with geniuses around every corner. So some parts are a pit and some parts aren't. It depends.
Any software "Architect" who can't build what they say to build should have to get a new job.
Any programmer of less experience who continues to argue with the "Architect" after they have met the challenge of proving their ideas can be done should also have to get a new job.
Many less senior programmers are better at the every day idioms of a given language or tools used in daily programming. Many senior people have to do more than just code. But most senior people who can still practice if called upon are much better problem solvers in part because they have already failed so many times and each new batch of programmers keep re-inventing the same mistakes.
How does an industry so full of brilliant people who consider themselves much smarter than their users keep arguing in these absolutes about programmers like their skills are easily classified.
Many things have become popular that were originally written like ass by someone who was better at making something people found useful than they were at data structures or thinking in big O.
A lot of genius language design people are nearly useless when the whole messy world of shit like network, filesystems and interacting with things not their language is involved.
Programmers being human also are not some consistent machines that constantly maintain some level of productivity regardless of what is going on in their personal life or their interests waxing or waning in a given problem space.
The people whose code has changed the world are maybe a handful or two. So, astounding developers much better than most do exist. But even they are not some multiple of every coder for every problem.

First of all something called "Psychological Science" already raises my hackles. Science in general has become so corrupt and politically oriented it makes killing elephants to vilify your technical rival's creation look understated. We have so much useless "science" being funded and won by professional grant hounds that garbage is inevitable.
The US has a legal system not a justice system. I suspect that is true of many countries. Once you are caught up in it then you will realize it isn't personal and it has nothing to do with the truth or justice. We have incentivized "winning" of trials and have blindly gone along with the idea that having both sides behave horribly ensures fairness because well..What else can you do?
Might be time to step back and think if a bunch of premises are working out. Does giving some wannabe tyrant a lifetime job really result in good decision making because they are "free" of political influence? Is it cool to allow for things like fine print and to allow lawyers to be immunized from many bad behaviors because lawyers keep writing rules in such a way to keep lawyers employed? Is it really cool that a prosecutor can lock someone up for 20 years who was innocent but that the recourse is some lawsuit where everyone pays for the settlement and they get to basically get away with "oops"? Is it cool a defense lawyer can "win" a case where they know their client is a child molesting cannibal?
Philosophy and big questions may seem quaint and are often the target of people who claim they are some form of scientist but for some reason my non scientist self and many average people seem to be able to suspect that the legal system is a bit fucked up, paying someone to publish papers on the implications of tyrannosaurus rex having created a vegan matriarchy might also be fucked up and if you let those things near each other some really bad stuff happens unless you get serious about fixing the core of problems both of them have.
I try to stay apolitical on boards that I want to see nerd stuff on but if you're going to essentially invoke Rawls veil then please explain why policy based on that way of thinking tends to produce worse outcomes than intended or in the case of things like abortion simply cannot be resolved philosophically without resorting to stupidly broken arguments anyone can see through.
I'm a big empathy fan but defending the growth of state power on grounds of being shorted in the lottery of life pretty much always leads to more abuse and only temporary mitigation of suffering.
