FWIW, depending on your state and policy, "glass only" claims don't affect your premiums. Agreed with the general principle of a higher deductible though.

Yes, even if you're using normal insert statements, it's good to limit the size of any one transaction to the extent you can for a host of reasons!

auto_increment doesn't lock the table. When you use an auto_increment column, MySQL will grab the next int as it creates the insert write-ahead log message. Two concurrent transactions with T1 beginning first and T2 beginning second but actually committing out of order can thus have out of order ids. e.g. T2(id=10) T1(id=9)

Also, note that this means auto_increment IDs are not continuous (read: a reader looking after T2 commits but before T1 will see a gap, and if T1 fails that gap is permanent!)

We adopted it in the SpeedTracer chrome plugin a while back. We were very happy with the results then. Though, for the stuff I've been working with lately most JSON APIs are defined by protos, and we just bridge with JsonFormat/ProtoTypeAdapter

Related: the dk.brics.automaton library (http://www.brics.dk/automaton/) is excellent.

It's got a much different API than java.util.RegEx, but it let's you work with Automatons as first class things instead of operating just with regexes. Being able to compute intersections, unions, shortest match examples, from multiple automata etc.. can be really useful.

You must have dealt with a completely different company and product. The public github is a lot better than the enterprise version at least in terms of stability. Still, both lack a lot of basic issue tracker and code review features.

Github enterprise was a disaster with just a couple hundred users.

Under the load of just a few hundred users it died almost every day. Their support team couldn't figure it out. We had to reboot the servers constantly.

We begged them to add an option to reject force push to master. They refused. We ended up monkey patching their obscured source to add the feature, but it broke on upgrades and was hard to maintain. This is something probably every single customer of theirs wants, and it should take one engineer less than a day to implement.

They only just added side by side diff support. IMHO this is a basic, core feature for any kind of code review workflow. I'm holding my breath for proper syntax highlighting while in diff view.

We've since moved on to Atlassian Stash. While it isn't perfect, it's a dream compared to Github enterprise and a lot less $$$ to boot.
