How are filled/cancelled jobs handled?

What is the planned intention for an upvote? Is it (1)I'm interested, (2)I applied, or (3) just keeping it ambiguous for now/undecided.

How are you finding/tweaking the ranking function? Most posters will probably not try to game significant support, but could for an additional one or two votes to gain a relative advantage. I imagine potential applicants will scan the whole list anyways, but did you consider a solely time-based ranking with no voting -- what HN seems to do for YC job postings currently?

EDIT: For example, I noticed someone submitted < 1 minute ago with a default score of 1. The posting, although submitted most recent, is ranked last and is on the second page.

Also, there are a couple times where a single company is posting separately for each position instead of consolidating to one thread. Is there any concern about a top-tier tech company owning most of the first page with many different postings? My apologies if these questions are a little premature -- perhaps we need a "Feature Requests" thread.

Good idea, but works most effectively when:

(1) Various encode/decode steps along to publishing the photo online don't corrupt EXIF data

(2) Thief isn't sophisticated to wipe/disable EXIF data. Many cameras shoot in a proprietary, higher-bit format and give you a fairly obvious wizard option on a desktop tool to include/exclude the EXIF data.

(3) Thief will use the camera, not sell it immediately into a second-hand market.

(4) Even if your camera is supported, it has to be configured to record EXIF data by both you and the thief. Some proprietary formats are fairly raw and don't always include EXIF-derivable data by default.

This will get some adoption because what other option do users have, but it will be interesting to see how many uploads convert to a lost camera being recovered/thief being apprehended. If users had the ability to leave a testimonial when there is some kind of closure, you could derive a metric of success.

Even if this product allowed you to have picosecond processing of market data and generation of trading signals, if you don't have exchange co-location, inherent network latency in your market data from providers and order routing to exchanges will make this thing pretty useless. For a hobbyist, throw leased lines out the door, now a Linode box, even a desktop running Windows XP with full-blown Nagle's algorithm, would have good-enough performance unless you can pour serious capital into a project.

They're also very vague on the software architecture or framework "kit". They don't say which feeds they support or if they provide any domain-specific data structures/standard trading algorithms like VWAP (slicing an order up over the day to give you "better" fills). I do see mention of an optional Feed Parser reference design, which I can't ascertain much value from. I am guessing it is mostly a generic kit for writing on their specialized hardware, and not specific to trading. There will be a lot of pain, maybe impossible to take vendor or open source libraries for market feed handling and compile it down using their embedded libraries. You'll be stuck doing tons of TCP/IP work, fun for hacking, but relative to the latency issues in your market data/order routing, it won't help you profit. Most people buy these appliances with included feed support.

With a big budget and co-location, this may be useful in bootstrapping some really low-level processing of market data, although there are a variety of hardware and software messaging solutions that would be a good alternative in driving latency lower if you have some money, Solace (HW), Tibco, 29West, etc to name a few.

I wish there was a hobbyist solution out there, but sorry, my initial impression says this isn't it. I would like more information, but maybe there are better hobbyist efforts out there. Interactive Brokers API isn't bad, and here's a full-blown real open-source trading kit that has a similar business model to MySQL. http://www.marketcetera.com/ Note: I feel that there are a few issues with this as well in some of the technologies they chose (JMS, Eclipse RCP).

Absolutely, HN has its fair share of inappropriate/bad jokes, but I think it happens more often because the guidelines are fairly agnostic.

Comedy is subversive, but the venue is usually not. When a comedian gives a routine on stage, the audience is primed and has certain expectations. When the audience's expectations are not aligned, it is bad for both the comedian and the audience.

My limited experiences on HN as a junior user have yielded a certain kind of fuzziness as to what is acceptable. On any given day, there is a lot of variance in the content, but usually HNish and that's a good thing. Officially, the guidelines are posted and they have an emphasis on intellectual stuff/tone, but leave evocative content unexplained. So the community decides, which is usually sporadic, hap-hazard, heavily-dependent on who posted the submission (people have expectations about what Zed Shaw is going to say), and the touchiness of the content. This probably doesn't happen in other communities that are more clearly guided as either relaxed or strict.

I liked the article, I just hate the inconsistency here on HN when it comes to humorous/evocative submissions and comments. We scold some for violating the guidelines, and we bless others. Can we sometimes be more relaxed about what is submitted? If the answer is yes as you are indicating, can we make it this way all the time?

Ultimately the evolving community here will make the final judgement. I just feel that the guidelines can be adjusted to reflect what is acceptable.
