I worked for a very old school manufacturing company based in Switzerland.
We wanted to roll our own IoT platform for sensors in the factory.
We spoke to MS, what they had was a load of garbage, so we decided to carry on as we were.
I later found out that the MS CEO called the CEO of this company and from then on we were fighting every day as to why we weren’t using MS. This was a private company, not even a big spend, yet they got the CEO involved on sales calls? That’s when I realised how corrupt it was an org.
It doesn’t really work like that in the UK. I doubt you’d get anyone to take it on, let alone for feee. Proving the material impact would be hard. She’s not been named publicly, no lost earnings etc.
I would like to think this sort of thing means we get better regulation, but who am I kidding.
I come to hacker news for this kind of well written content. As a person who works in a non engineering role (although I started out there) this is brilliantly written and explained. Thank-you.
Is the answer not because the world was at war and throwing all it's resources into beating the other side?
Surely the GDP spend per capita on science and research was far what it has been since.
This is why big incumbent car companies will lose against people like Tesla. The amount of organisational energy and capital required for a project like this is huge, and it's pay off..? Not so sure.
I also struggled with books. Despite being an avid WW2 and science fiction fan I avoided lengthy texts and just got my information online.
As has been said many times over that information is often, although not always, low quality.
For me I never connected my dyslexia with my inability to read (obvious I know) then I discovered audio books and my world changed.
I’d recommend also trying audio books. The format is not for everyone, but quality stories, be they fiction or non-fiction expand the mind.
Someone here recommended the Count of monte cristo as an amazing read, and I'm currently half way though, its thrilling! Thank you to that person btw.

I did wonder why those chips were so expensive? I have a super limited knowledge of hardware so I was unable to figure it out exactly.

When I worked at GDS the aim was to use PDF’s they were considered to have a long shelf life, where as HTML and the web in general can evolve and leave some people without a way to read it. I wonder whats changed?
