How does detecting the emails were fake address the DMCA claim on his YouTube channel? It’s my understanding that YouTube won’t intervene in DMCA claims even if the claims were false.

By my estimation, about 45% of the article is about DHH's revenue which is irrelevant to the discussion about Matt's behavior. Links on HN about Matt and WordPress keep getting downranked, and that'll continue to happen as long as Matt is not interested in seriously discussing it.

Not that my opinion matters, but my preference would be that Matt stops with the pithy comments like "this is a respectful debate" or "I'll try to do better" and is instead just honest that he doesn't care what others think.

I was trying to mirror my Android smartphone to my Samsung TV to show a webpage to someone. This feature is called "Smart View" in the TV's menu, but I didn't know how to connect, so I searched that name in the Google Play store. There are dozens of results, only one of them is the official app that has any chance of working. There are two apps[1][2] that actually appear to be the same app just with slightly different names presumably so they appear twice in the search results. One app[3] has some very suspicious ratings and I can't help but notice that the publisher's name is "SmartThings.net" which appears to add more credibility until you see the domain has nothing to do with the app. I understand it can be hard for Google to vet these apps but some of these failures (like verifying you actually own the domain you are pretending to be affiliated with) seem like they could be automated.

Before going further, I want to say that you and I agree. I just want to add a bit more context to some of the details in your response.

This is true, but most Wikimedia employees don't live in SF. This page[1] says that half of the people working on teams based in the SF office were actually working remotely, and this sentence was added to the page in 2018.

Unfortunately this is already true. It looks like the average salary for a senior software developer at WMF is 132k[2]. When you consider that up to half of the employees live in SF, that is far below market rate.

I noticed this last year when I applied for a software engineering job. For that position, the process is:

    - Initial screening (done)
    - Personal essay (this stage)
    - Standardized aptitude and personality tests
    - Meet and greet with an engineer
    - General interview(s)
    - Recruitment screen
    - Technical assessment
    - Role-specific interview(s)
    - Hiring manager interview
    - Senior leadership interview

I highly doubt the initial screening is done by a human. So they want the essays and personality tests done before you speak to a human at the company, and they are probably not even on the team you're applying for. If you're unlucky, every human involved in the process will be on a different team until you get to the hiring manager interview, which is at the very end.

Not only this but on Glassdoor I found dozens of people saying that they ghost you before the hiring manager interview so you could spend tens of hours interviewing and never speak to anyone on the team.

Facebook claims that the data they have on people cannot be understood by the average person, and because the GDPR requirements state that data needs to be given in an easily understood format, giving this data would violate the law. So they refuse to give it.

This was after months of simply ignoring the requests.

I've never made a renter's insurance claim.

Pet insurance is only for emergency and/or life-threatening injuries and conditions, and surgeries and other costs related to them. Think getting hit by a car or getting cancer. It doesn't cover vaccinations, annual visits, and tests done for preventative measures. This is the main difference between pet insurance and US human health insurance since if I understand correctly, most (all?) medical plans offered in the US are required to provide preventative coverage for annual visits, vaccinations, etc.

My pets are young and healthy so 100% of their medical costs are preventative which made me consider cancelling my policy. For reference I pay $65/mo for my policy which covers three pets. In my area an annual exam and vaccination series for the three pets costs $300 so about 2/3rds of my annual pet medical expenses is "wasted" on premiums. But a minor accident that could happen to any pet ended up costing more than a year's worth of premiums and it was nearly 100% covered by insurance without a deductible applying.

I've still paid more in premiums than I've gotten back (which is obvious; how else does the insurance make a profit?). I was considering self-insuring instead by taking the money I was spending on premiums and putting it into a savings account. After doing some research on emergency procedures I realized that in some rare circumstances a single injury could cost a decade of premiums. If this happened multiple times I'd have to make a tough decision to put down the pet simply because I couldn't afford the procedure. These pets didn't ask to be brought into this world and are often abused and neglected before becoming adopted. They deserve a long and healthy life if one is possible. I'd rather "waste" a few hundred dollars a year for the peace of mind that I can afford to treat any illness or injury that occurs.

I had never thought people might blame Dr. K for his death until I read the article. The man attempted suicide in the past before ever talking to Dr. K, his friends and family said he was constantly at risk of going through with it again despite going to multiple therapists, and after speaking with Dr. K he said the conversation was helpful to him. Blaming Dr. K for one conversation with him half a year before he was finally successful with the suicide feels to me like blaming a doctor for being unable to save someone with a chronic condition after seeing them once in the ER.
