It's clear that there also needs to be a change in culture and training among police services to discourage the intuition-based practice of deciding someone is guilty and then pressuring (borderline torturing) them to say something that can be taken as a confession.
For many human movements, the relation between intensity and injury is a u-curve with high risk at extremely low intensity (atrophy) and extremely high intensity (overuse/repetitive strain), and low risk at moderate intensity.
Sidenote: I recently finished reading The Story of the Human Body by Daniel Lieberman, in which he addresses this issue (among many others). The book is absolutely fantastic, an engaging, highly-readable page-turner packed with insights and epiphanies about how we can think about contemporary challenges from an evolutionary perspective.

Humans are domesticated primates, and like all domesticated animals we demonstrate the canonical properties of neoteny, or the adult retention of childlike traits: physical traits like rounder heads, flatter faces, shorter noses, bigger eyes and shorter jaws, of course; but also and more importantly the cognitive traits of playfulness, curiosity, creativity and innovation.
Indeed, it is in many ways the explosion of cultural innovation and exchange approximately 50 thousand years ago that marks the distinction between archaic humans and modern homo sapiens sapiens, who spread to every habitable continent on earth and developed a wide variety of inventions to facilitate living in diverse climates. Archaic humans also had culture, of course, but nothing like the innovation curve that has characterized the period since then.
America has some of the worst worker protection laws and regulations in the developed world: occupational health and safety; minimum wage; paid time off (vacation, illness, parental leave); lunch and other breaks; consecutive hours worked in a day; 'at-will' termination; and so on. It really is an extreme outlier.
In that case, is my clothes dryer a robot? In addition to its timed dry setting, it also has a feedback setting in which it runs until the clothes inside have reached a (configurable) specified level of dryness, at which point it turns off.
I love running just about anywhere (except on a treadmill, which is just intolerably drab), but my absolute favourite places to run are on forest trails. There is something indescribably beautiful, spiritual and serene/exhilarating about running through the forest. I feel a profound sense of connection with my human and hominid ancestors going back millions of years. I feel the most human when running through the woods.
There’s a curious anomaly, though: if you try to scroll using touch screen scrolling, the page happily moves up and down, even while JavaScript is blocking nearly everything else on the page. This also works for touch pad scrolling, mouse wheel scrolling, and click-and-drag scrolling (depending on your browser).
Mouse wheel scrolling still works on Chrome but not on Firefox.
I'm in my mid-40s. For about 15 years, I sat at a desk writing code and slowly dying. Three and a half years ago, I started running three times a week. Then, a little over two years ago, I switched to a standing desk. I've never looked back.
To avoid stiffening up, I play music (usually progressive house or something similarly rhythmic-but-not-too-distracting) into noise-cancelling headphones and let the music move me. Because I'm not standing still, I don't experience lower back pain, stiffness, soreness or anything else.
If I had to go back to sitting now, it would kill me.
[] NB I wrenched my back last autumn by twisting in a funny way while painting a ceiling with a roller on an extension pole. After a couple of weeks of Advil and an aggressive regimen of back exercises and stretches, my back pain was completely gone and I feel better than ever.
Our approach builds on generative image models that leverage adversarial learning, which we apply to video. The basic idea behind the approach is to compete two deep networks against each other. One network ("the generator") tries to generate a synthetic video, and another network ("the discriminator") tries to discriminate synthetic versus real videos. The generator is trained to fool the discriminator.
There's another factor as well: for older houses, most building codes require that the roof be reinforced in order to hold the weight of a solar array on top of the shingles. But if the shingles themselves are solar panels, this issue goes away.
This phenomenon is not peculiar to super-heated markets like Silicon Valley. We've had several people cold-visit us to see if they can buy our house, and I live in Hamilton, a mid-sized Southern Ontario city around 90 km west of Toronto.
Our real estate market has certainly picked up over the past several years (after decades of being severely undervalued), but median house prices are still less than half of what you pay closer to Toronto.
