Don't let things like distract you. What matters here is building someone people and will pay for. Focus on that. Not about things like valuation, investment kits, and management fees (eww)
I visited this site and had no clue what to do after 5 minutes.. Is this like Mint? I need to link all my accounts so they can verify it? I get points for reading the articles? It's just a lottery? All confused... horrible intro.
People love food porn, but this is the opposite of that.. snapping pictures of healthy foods. So you're going against the grain here... The social aspect isn't compelling compared to something like Foodspotting which is all about taking pictures of savory food (that's unhealthy)
I think the days of building a content site that relies on search is over... everyday millions of new pages are populating the web, and Google is becoming stricter in their algorithm. If you're building a site, you need to make sure it's
a) something engaging that people will want to visit over and over
b) something that can be marketed in ways that doesn't rely on search such as word of mouth, social media sharing (preferably built into the product like FourSquare)
c) uses a channel to make sure one-time visitors convert to regular visitors. Such as daily newsletters/emails.
I agree. I did this for 5 months and counting, and the thing is I am horrible at detecting when I am starting to burn out.
Last weekend, I experienced a very scary panic attack while I was commuting back home. It felt like my brain cells were literally killing each other, and that something extremely horrible was going to happen. I thought I was going to have a heart attack... when I went home, I told myself to take the weekend off which I did.. I got a massage, and now I've promised myself to sleep on time everyday, and get up earlier.
Everyone thinks mental breakdowns and insanity happens to "other people" (the ones in mental hospitals, the ones taking Prozac, etc). What we don't realize is that mental breakdowns can easily happen to us if we don't take care of ourselves.
I agree. You also can't just pick anyone as a co-founder. Not only is it hard to find entrepreneurial people, but also people with the right skill set to complement you, and the right rapport to work with on a daily basis. That's HARD to find.
Could DropBox just decide to say screw you to everyone and not be liquid? I don't think the founders would have a problem receiving a nice amt of salary every year, have something fulfulling to work on everyday, and not have to answer to a boss, whether it's a parent company or Wall Street... I mean, there's NO guarantee they will be liquid if the company succeeds, right?
I agree. It may have some insight, but doesn't really contain a lot of substance. Doesn't emotionally resonate with me... it's like a teacher telling you to behave.
I think we can learn a lot from tribal societies. While it's unfeasible to have it in modern society, there's a lot to like from them including their focus on social relationships. I bet all the mental illnesses we have right now are partially cause by effects of the modern world: long commutes, demoralizing and meaningless work, less social ties, less people to confide in, overpopulation
Seeing strangers most of the day leads you to subconsciously believe you're just a insignificant cog in the wheel.. while being in a tribal community leads one to feel they're an integral part of the whole because everyone needs each other. There's a stark identity difference because of our perceived relationship to everyone else.
Probably not a practical solution but could you save some of it in the user preferences? If it's an image, you could probably base64 encode it and save it there. I know it's not meant to save tons of data though so probably not a feasible solution. Or how about encoding it and putting it in a Sqlite database?
