Reminds me of: People said you can’t write a financial trading system in a garbage collected language. Turns out you can as long as you don’t garbage collect during the trading day by carefully managing allocations and manually running GC each day before trading starts.
Or the old story of the junior engineer who finds a memory leak in a missile’s guidance system and the senior engineer says the memory leak is fine as long as you don’t run out of memory before the missile completes its mission.
Same. I considered switching iCloud accounts when I switch between work/personal modes but decided that the risk of accidentally leak information between account or losing data was too great.
At least with the Macs I can create a separate OS user account and have that account signed into the other iCloud account. Think iPad OS will support multiple users some day?
With Sidecar I was hoping that physically connecting the iPad to the Mac would be enough. Would a physical connection (with perhaps an additional prompt) be a sufficiently secure authorization alternative? Putting my opsec hat on: I suppose someone could (theoretically) use an adapter to tunnel USB/Thunderbolt through a wireless connection to work around the need for a physical connection.
A company I worked for defined big data as anything not analyzable with a relational database - a PDF or video was big data. Companies say they want the latest buzzword even though it’s against their own interest and other companies say “we can give that to you” and instead deliver something that is of actual value so the license gets renewed. Same thing happened with SOA, REST, microservices, blockchain. IBM developed a blockchain product just to get the sales conversations going and then sold something else. Imagine being on that product’s team.
My understanding is that Stripe offers UI to sign up for a subscription, but then offers only an API for other subscription actions such as changing from monthly to yearly or cancelling. Someone have a link describing Stripe's comprehensive UI for subscriptions?
Is there a simple way to charge for a monthly PWA subscription without coding a backend to handle the various subscription use cases and without providing a complicated UI to subscribers?
Occasionally people will get angry that I won’t eat the same food they’re eating. This prompted me to get business cards printed where on one side is an acknowledgment of the social value of eating the same food together and an explanation that I cannot because if I do I will in severe pain. On the other side is a list of ingredients and foods that have gluten. I’ve found that when people see that their behavior has prompted me to get business cards printed they will stop and have empathy.
Speaking of shame: Many people in the Bay Area blame tech workers for their woes. A friend of mine, an engineer at Google, also believes this and feels much shame. If they can focus on what others are doing wrong it makes them feel a little better.
The customer contract at the tattoo shop I worked at required customer to take full responsibility for understanding their tattoo, especially non-English words.
Also customers had to attest that they are not or have ever been a lawyer. The only person who read the entirety of the contract admitted she was a recovering lawyer. The tattoo artist made an exception.
Random side note: the artist I worked for fought for legislation to require tattoo ink manufacturers to publish the ingredients they use. Anyone know if such legislation ever passed?
When pairing I’m annoyed when a non-urgent IM or email notification pops up and I lose my pair’s focus. Some folks have their text messages and social media notifications popping up too, preventing concentration for more than a few minutes.
