This feels like an online version of rubber necking
I don't find this bizarre, rare or unusual. If you've been online long enough (forums, irc, etc) chances are some people who you've interacted/worked with, have passed away.
I can count up to 5 of these cases. Car accidents, cancer, etc... As someone said, c'est la vie

If you haven't written your will yet: you might want to do that soon. It's important.
You might want to write another document about your wishes after your death. Do you want your organs to be donated? (Probably best to talk to close relatives to let them know and carry a donor card); do you care about how your body is disposed of.
You might want to provide instructions for your accounts and data. It would be a shame if all your photos become unavailable after your death.
There are probably services that provide useful checklists for this stuff.

Thats life. To clarify: this is NOT about a GitHub lead developer.
Updated the title to be avoid confusion.
What happens to the project in this kind of case? Can someone else take it over?
Someone did take it over. Not sure how github handles that, however. see: http://screenfreeze.net/2015/01/
