I don't like it either. I'd prefer something more vintage like this one [1]. Anyway, I think Google Maps should probably focus on issues other than colors.

In google maps many of pins for e.g. hotels are red and the push pin that marks your search result is also red just bigger and in different shade of red.
I must have spend years trying to find the push pin for my search result. I am not aware that should have any particular issues with differencing colors. It only on Google maps I have this problem. I do wonder why there are so few complains about this detail, so I guess must have some colors issues with my eyes since no one else seems to complain about this.
I can see the difference between the two shades of red but they could easily have chosen a different color for the marker for your search result so i stands out much more clearly.

Too many areas have a green tint and those areas have nothing to do with greenery.
