I have been following the development of Smithereen for years and I am quite excited to see it finally getting to a place where its ready for public use. The amount of work Grishka has put into this piece of software is pretty amazing.
you can also use wordpress with the fediverse too, there is a good plugin that lets you syndicate your posts out and let the rest of the fediverse follow/comment/etc from where they already are
The warning that it loads only on Chromium based browsers loads off the screen on an iPhone so it looks like a blank page until you scroll down. Would be a quick fix.
Its a direct ripoff of the original Byte (by Dom Hofmann of Vine fame) and I just realized it looks like its made by the Giphy team that facebook acquired.
I don't accept this view from bigger tech companies either and really have no interest in using Microsoft, Apple, Google or any of the other big tech companies which I trust less and less every passing day with their adherent behavior.
I will indeed file an issue and believe that its worth discussing with them. My main point was not even their narrow view of gender being a binary but that it deserved to be included as the only other thing to fill out on the first screen when you click the new contact button. If they had 'first name', 'last name', 'note about person' as the three fields being the default and had this gender drop down on the same page with the rest of the options for contact details on the next page I wouldn't have even noticed it.
You sure about your comment "I probably couldn't use any software at all." All the software you use asked to know your gender? Most of the software I use on a daily basis has no concept of gender and doesn't have any reason to.
Was excited to see this because there is a serious lack of good contact managers / address book software and signed up to their demo right away but was quite disappointed to see their default options for adding a new contact were:
1. First Name
2. Last Name
3. Gender: Male / Female / I'd rather not say
I would not trust the software from a project that thinks the third most important thing about a person is their gender and certainly not trust them from their perception that there are only two valid genders or "lets not talk about it"
