The earliest commercial electric distribution systems in the US used direct current. This was the only technically viable option at the time, but voltage drop made it necessary for power plants to be close to the user -- even in expensive locations -- which in turn required the continuous transportation of fuel to these power plants.

In the 1880s, various inventions made it possible to use high-voltage AC to transmit electric power without significant voltage drop. It became cheaper to put the power plants near the fuel and move the electric power. Furthermore, it became possible to generate electricity from power sources, like great waterfalls, that could not be moved at all.

The moral of the story? If anyone ever invents a way to move code from programmers to employers more cheaply than moving the programmers themselves, Silicon Valley is doomed.

Having once worked for Intel, that seems about normal for vital information to pass from one fiefdom to another. The poor sap manning the forum wasn't saying "we're not telling you", he was saying "they're not telling me".

(Now, if the other guy thinks you're encroaching on his turf, the response time approaches infinity. In that case pretending to be a member of the public on a forum might be an effective strategy; if I'd listened to Andy and thought of it myself I might still be there.)

Typically a programmer's daily work product can be moved half way around the world in a fraction of a second, for a fraction of a cent.

Perhaps there should be an addition to Latency numbers every programmer should know:

I'm not surprised. Some years ago I worked for a company that had NTT as a customer, and they were easily an order of magnitude more thorough and careful than anyone else. We used to joke that they knew our product better than we did.
