First, let's recall that David Remnick is one of the Zionist war pimps who enthusiastically advocated the Iraq War for Israel. This is important as it's vital to understand that he's presenting a "Washington Consensus" view; and one that is mostly wrong.
The coup in Ukraine was funded by the US. Victory Nuland, she of "fuck the EU," admitted that the US had spent $5 billion [1] to overthrow the Ukrainian government. During the phone call where she uttered that infamous phrase [2] she discussed, quite casually, which puppet the US planned to install in place of the legitimate government.
The coup in Ukraine was the first part of the plan. The second part [3] was a plan to use a cutout force to seize Crimea and (ultimately) kick out the Russians from their naval bases there. Why? Very simple. These bases host the forces with which Russia is defending the Syrian regime.
The US, along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel, UK, France, Jordan (and perhaps others) has been trying to overthrow the government of Syria for several years now, and it's been planned [4] for longer than that. The continued failure to achieve this aim has put Obama and his R2P [5] "humanitarian bombing" brigade and the neocons into conniption fits. They got their way in Libya, turning it into a failed state in record time, and were determined to do the same in Syria.
The failure in Syria begot the coup in Ukraine, with the plan to seize the Crimea, kick out the Russians, and thus tip the balance in Syria (with the US-friendly puppet government of Ukraine as a nice additional part of the plan). A madcap scheme, to be sure, and one that the Russians knew about far in advance. Did you think Nuland's call was the only thing they intercepted? Thus the immediate quashing [6] of the Crimea adventure in advance.
While Obama whines about Russia's military action, he can't do much about it. Is he going to war with Russia over Ukraine? No, no more than Bush was willing to go to war with Russia over Georgia, when his puppet there staged a provocation and got firmly slapped down by the Russians. [7]
Russia sees the US coup in Ukraine as a rash provocation, one that the US government had forsworn. [8] So it's hardly a surprise that Russia is responding forcefully to another US regime change operation, particularly when it's in the Russian "near abroad." The population of the eastern portion of Ukraine is also substantially Russian.
The end result of this incredibly stupid neocon/R2P stunt is that "the tanks will be rolling in a matter of days" and they may go all the way to the Polish border. [9] If you pay attention to new reports, you'll notice that the Ukrainian military has not been involved. They've stood down, and may in fact ally themselves with the Russian intervention.
The bottom line is that this was a totally avoidable situation. The US should have stayed out of Syria, stayed out of Ukraine, and stayed out of Libya and Iraq too, for that matter, along with many more interventions, stretching back for decades. But as long as the Zionist occupation of Washington continues, with Zionist thugs like Nuland cooking up these disastrous schemes, we're likely to continue fighting on behalf of "Clean Break" [10] fantasies for decades to come.
