We need a senior engineer to own our data integration and cloud infrastructure layer — the connective tissue between utilities, grid operators, OEM hardware, weather services, and our optimization engine.

– Green Button Connect pipelines — ingesting interval consumption, billing, and meter data from utilities (ConEd, PG&E, SCE, etc.) via OAuth2 + ESPI
– Weather and solar forecast data pipelines
– Utility bill reproduction engine — modeling site economics before and after Strobe to forecast financial impact across dozens of rate structures. This simulation infrastructure is core to how we sell and deliver value.

Small, high-performing team. No layers. You’ll own systems end-to-end: design → deploy → on-call.
We’re looking for *fungible generalists*, not narrow specialists. Strong fit if you’re comfortable with:
- AWS-heavy backend work (Lambda, APIs, GraphQL, data pipelines)
- Operating real-time production systems
- Python / TypeScript (Rust a plus)
Depending on fit, you might work on:
- Telemetry & control over unreliable networks
- Embedded Linux / RTUs (Modbus, BACnet, DNP3)

I live outside of Seattle. But nearly all of the work I do with USDS requires me to be physically present. So I travel a lot (4/5 days a week). You aren't going to find a badly broken technology project in the Federal Government that is able to leverage remote people effectively.
One of the USDS project selection criteria is that we prioritize work that based on what will do the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the greatest need.
I do not believe a Muslim Registry does any good for anyone. Being involved in building one would require formally changing our values which would be visible to everyone in USDS.

If you are an under performer and you don't know your management is failing you badly. I had three different managers while I was at Netflix (I switched teams once). 2 were great, 1 underperformed. The underperforming manager was not at Netflix for very long, which I appreciated.
I don't regret leaving. I've had a lot of fun working outside of Netflix. I do still hold Netflix in very high regard though and have a number of good friends still working there. If the conditions were right, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I worked in two different groups while I was at Netflix. I loved it. The engineers on their team are consistently good and there is low tolerance for under performers. They take their culture seriously and their leadership is very strong. I'd be happy to work for them again in the future.
Re: expectations about excess work. It's your own responsibility to set expectations about what you can get done and how quickly you can get it done. I was reasonably successful at this and took lots of time off the last year I was there, m wife had our first baby. Since I was able to set reasonable expectations I got a great raise that year, despite the time that I took off.
