It says it checks if those folders are available - which could mean checking if the name is not already taken, and then creating the path for itself to use.
I was wary of this thread showing up on HN because I felt I was a bit unkind when posting in that thread, but Chris' comment towards me seemed completely unjustified. And he deleted a prior post along the same lines, hence why I quoted him on my next post.

When I saw folks flagging this story, the soda/sugar/teeth story was exactly what I thought of. This story has far more to do with tech than basic dentistry writeups.
The whois shows that it previously expired in April 2012. I thought most registrations were for 1 year increments, so this would be a strange time for a expiration.
