I used to do page layout nearly 10 years ago for academic and medical books, using InDesign. And Quark before that (I'm that old).
I always thought that the process could be automated. So many things needed manual fiddling. Kerning, placing pictures and illustrations next to their text references, splitting up chapters, indexing etc.
How far along are we with automating book layout? Looking at the LaTeX article, it seems to be more for academic papers. And the vocabulary seems ugly for text formatting. Is there some system where I can give it a style and feed it a markdown text file (with markup for images) which will layout a whole PDF book?
