Look at the subject materials with the perspective of learning not finishing tasks. I'm back to school after 6 years in industry doing master's. I hate these assignments and some subjects I have to do where lecturer is just too much to tolerate. However, all subjects and it's contents are interesting.
I have 3 projects to finish in 3 weeks and 4 assignments each week on top of that. Just thinking of them encourages me to quit. I feel depressed. I wake up at night worried and heart beat really high. But I think I have developed some resistance after all this time. Now I take all tasks from the persective of learning. When I think oh I have to finish this project, then I feel stressed But when I think "Oh, lets read what that is, and what about that, how does this work.." then the stress is far less
Not sure if it's arrogance but my team mate always tries to win (i might be wrong). For example, if we are talking about topic A, as soon as she realizes what she's saying isn't correct, she jumps to another topic or starts to say " Yeah , Yeah I know that... but.... ) haha.... As a friend she is good with all..... professionally i wish I wasn't working with her....
"PhD is for people who want to push forward the state of the art" - that statement alone is more than enough to forget all other items you've mentioned as 'things to consider' :) that's what drives people (well outcome can be different)
The problem is: We programmers choose to stick to the companies run by money crazy people who don't care about us. It's a choice we make. We want to feel safe, love to see payment coming to our bank accounts every week. Problem is in us, not in the people who run the business - most of them have no respect for developers.
We all need to be brave, make better choices, refuse to be slaves, search for better options - isn't it what we Engineers are supposed to do?
If we start leaving companies who don't treat programmers well, eventually they'll realize the fact. It's already happening..... more developers are doing start-ups, more people are doing freelancing.....
Finally, NO UNIONS please..... we enjoy solving problems, we enjoy programming, Money comes second.....
Thank you for the comment. Makes me feel good.
I too want to continue being developer, hopefully I'll become a good one like you. BUT somehow environment within the company presents constraints.....
Thank you for your comment. PM isn't the role I'd want to be in but I just happen to love projects organized, process in place so that I can focus more in my programming.
I wouldn't be interested to be a full time manager but I'd surely like to see the team better managed, right tools used, development done in a better process and follow standards.
That is one of my weakness. I just can't tell people I'm great at what I do or even I'm good. I always feel others are way better than me and always seem to find some fault within me.
I always listen more and talk less. When someone has Ideas I respect them and I dnt try to come up with anything because I think I might hurt them or they might feel bad.
