I was out on the North Shore of Hood Canal (on the peninsula West of Seattle) - the turboprop went over at about 300 - 500m, just across the water (I think about 1000m) from us. Thought this was odd as we never see commercial traffic out here. Then the F15s went by, one low and trailing the plane, and one much higher... Whole thing had a super weird feeling.
Would love to know if there's a clean / simple integration for something like Rook or OpenEBS. IIRC, I saw a few folks had Rook set up manually on a Rancher-based cluster in the tech preview or beta 2.0 days...
Having a simple way to run your own block storage that could withstand node failures / network issues would be fantastic.
This is a common misconception - manufacturing output, beyond drops during major recessions, has steadily increased[1]. Recently, increases have slowed but outside recessions, "the general decline of US manufacturing capacity" is just not happening.
What is dropping are inputs for the same output - employment being the most obvious / painful, but power, raw materials, etc. are all being used more sparingly as manufacturers improve processes and adopt new technologies.

Actually, a heck of a lot more than that - WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) can give you 40Gbps (or more, though cost per bit per second starts to increase substantially) _per wavelength_, with 40 waves per strand (again, more possible, but cost-effectiveness not as good).
So, 1.6Tbps per strand fairly cost-effectively, with more physically possible. That 32-strand cable could carry 48Tbps with a config like this.
Upstream bandwidth isn't really expensive if you're selling to eyeballs (i.e. those who primarily consume services rather than provide them). However, as you said the fixed cost of laying fiber is non-trivial, as is the endpoint equipment to terminate all these waves and do something (route, etc.) with the transported data.
