"It would be easy to give the public information and hope they change behaviour but we know that doesn’t work very satisfactorily. Otherwise none of us would be obese, none of us would smoke and none of us would drive like lunatics." -- Iain Potter of the New Zealand Health Sponsorship Council
agreed. Very suspicious timing. What ever happened to all of those Bank of America files they were supposed to release? I read on of their power point presentations and it gave absolutely no information. Made me think of this speech given by Richard Thieme http://danielmillsap.com/blog/technology-news/black-hat-2011...
All it would take is someone who knows what they are doing to go check real quick. report back whether or not the phone is throwing out information or not.
do I detect some Apple employees/shareholders in here?
I think the (CIQ)video made pretty clear the fact that YOU CANT TURN IT OFF and that THERE IS NO OPT IN/OUT button because you would have to be digging around like a technophile to find it in the first place. I would not be at all surprised if Apple uses something like this. Wireshark anyone?
lol thank you. I'm luvin it.
"For no reason I know, works of philosophy are compromised by even a typo in the introduction, but in science you can open with a golden shower anecdote and no one notices. Oh well. To the experiments."
I think Lifehacker had a spin of the story in which the author linked the firefox APP to the IE ICON and said if you wanted to be really sneaky you could just rename Firefox to IE Explorer.
I applaud the author's use of detailed documentation and the ability and willingness to dig deeper into the technical side of what he believes to be the problem. As soon as I had installed the Firefox addon Noscript I began to notice the facebook scripts put in place on many sites having nothing to do with Facebook. Their real interest is not in being nice by providing you with a free service, but in using data aggregated by its large user base in order to find patterns - and to sell that information to the highest bidder. Pretty soon advertisers and governments will know more about you than you do yourself.
From http://www.nsc.liu.se/~nixon/sshprobes.html
"So, to more precisely describe what we have found: a small subset of the ssh logins from Chinese IPs to two of our systems are preceded by one or two connections from unrelated Chinese IP addresses, in which opaque binary data is thrown at sshd." "My hypothesis is that just over a year ago, a new function in the firewall went into limited beta test, where a sample of outgoing ssh connections from China is carefully selected for secondary screening.""For the selected ssh connections, the target system is probed from one or two IP addresses under the control of the Chinese government. These may be otherwise innocent addresses that are spoofed at the level of the great firewall, or they may be actual computers under remote control by the government - I have no way to tell.""In some cases, the legitimate ssh connections are unsuccessful; they appear to be interrupted. This may be a result of the firewall deciding the target system to be unsuitable and injecting RST packets into the TCP stream to kill it.
The last few weeks, the frequency of the probing has increased. This might mean the beta test period is nearing its end, and that this function is about to become more widely deployed."
I found the link interesting and am glad it was posted on here. If not the content itself, then certainly the ensuing conversation is relevant to HN. The fact that sexuality is so taboo in our culture yet motivates humans at the most basic level is fascinating. Others question why this link and not others get so much attention, which is another HN relevant issue. Maybe more people saw it at the same time and the sudden influx of upvotes sent it on its way.
I thought OSX firmware password could be bypassed by resetting PRAM. If true then does this invalidate their argument in FAQ about the thief reformatting the HD?
I first admired OSX because of its simplicity and the way it kind of just knew what I wanted to do and started me on the journey that way. Lion was a step backward. defaults were no longer what I would find convenient. Constantly asking me if I want to open windows upon logon even though I always uncheck the box so it should know by now. The reverse scrolling which makes it a pain to use any other system after getting used to reverse direction. I'm starting to like Linux Mint more and more.
ALESSANDRO ACQUISTI gave a cool talk at the 2011 BlackHat presenting his research findings which indicate that by taking a picture of your face, that picture can be correlated with your facebook profile, which can be used to take simply your birthday, and using that information, using a computer to guess your social security number with significant accuracy compared to random. here is video
