Odd that in the entire explanation they completely ignore embryology and the pathway dependence that came with evolutionary progression between species
Came here to say the same thing. Medically confabulation is different than hallucination and far more similar to what is being described. Confabulation is seen with wernike-korsokoff syndrome which can be found in very long time alcohol use disorder. The patient makes up stories to fit the gaps in their memory without necessarily realizing that is what they are doing.
Whereas hallucinations are more like present sensory disturbances happening at that moment.
Unable to access the full paper at the moment, but curious if they addressed the fact that Bupropion can take 6-8wks before symptoms such as depressed mood or anhedonia are affected. Were these bupropion naïve patients? From the abstract, this was only a 6wk study - which means that the bupropion may not yet have been working at maximal efficacy for those in the bupropion group during the study period and therefore of course the AXS would show a benefit when compared to only bupropion
Additionally to the parasympathetic changes, there are mechanical effects. the lungs are a negative pressure system. When you breathe, you drop the diaphragm, increasing the negative pressure in your chest while also increasing the positive pressure in your abdomen. Blood flows through the vena cava (the main vein bringing blood back to the heart which runs through the abdomen and chest) towards the negative pressure. This means more blood gets back to the heart (“increased preload”) and so the right heart can pump more blood to the lungs, and more blood gets to the left heart to be sent around the body without the heart muscle actually having to do more work.
Definitely pick it up. One of the more unexpectedly profound books I’ve ever read. His tactics for dissecting stories are relevant far beyond just writing. He also somehow manages to hit the right tone while exploring the short stories, engaging the reader on complex topics while simultaneously not becoming boring or pedantic
It appears they’re referring to Breachers Syndrome or something very similar. With service members who were exposed to small repetitive explosions, some studies have found astroglial scarring between the white and gray matter of the brain. Essentially shearing forces pass through the tissue, the tissues move at different rates because of the difference in densities which leads to tissue damage at the interface. Causes symptoms somewhat similar to CTE
There’s an amazing book by Rory Stewart, a UK diplomat/former MP, called The Places Between. He walked across Afghanistan in 2002 and the book documents his journey. it gives a nuanced cultural description of the tribal landscape (and is fascinating not dry). It’s worth picking up
There’s a whole art to coffee making. People have mentioned the grind and the strategy for brewing, but the freshness of the beans is a big deal. Look for brands with a “roast date” instead of a “best by” date. Also i personally think pour overs (hario or chemex) are the way to go. With good, fresh beans, the right grind, water that is not too hot, a well bloomed and timed pour... you really can start to taste the notes in coffee similar to the way you do in wine. There is no bitterness (that usually means the coffee was burnt).
Agreed. That is certainly the dark side of that path. From a user/patient perspective, the interesting side of that equation might be a world where those biometrics are tracked and integrated (with your consent) with an EHR so that your doctor can see continuous metrics in a way that is actionable for clinical decision making.
Phase 3: Connection of all Apple health fitness tracking/health tracking data. As wearables and body data monitoring continue to evolve and increase the number of bio markers/biometrics measured, apple is poised to integrate these in a way that Peloton and other fitness focused brands may or may not be.
