this is useless. In the python interface they are obviously lists. Is the author arguing that cpython implements them as C arrays? I don't know because the terms weren't defined.

If the author believes clarity will arise from pedantry, maybe he should start with wikipedia

it's not as if we were purchasing one language. It's a stretch goal, with python as the reward. The goal and the difficulty of implementation are not related.

I seem to be getting a lot of gists that are distinctly not application code (ie diffs, make files, random text). I think you could really improve the signal:noise if you let people vote gists as "not applicable" or such.

just started playing around with it. We've been using hive on EMR with tables stored in S3 (json formatted). using a single m1.large to run run queries over an hour of data was taking 10-15 minutes. Bigquery returns the same query in seconds. For example, extracting referrer domains on big query:

  > Query complete (7.6s elapsed, 583 MB processed)

granted that's with an under-provisioned emr "cluster", so I don't want to assign too much meaning to the results, but they are promising.

I'll run some more comparisons on a larger cluster and update later.

Doing it client side has a couple issues.

1. you need to block the click event until you get a response from your analytics endpoint. Google suggests doing this by adding a 100ms delay: http://support.google.com/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=e...

2. you might get holes in your data for a number of reasons: the user has JS turned off; 100ms isn't long enough for the request to go through; or the user might click off before your script can attach itself to the onclick event.

You definitely don't want to get yourself in a situation where you go down and all outbound links stop working, but if you can fail gracefully, replacing the link makes a lot more sense.
