Have been using SPSS decades and I think it is a good statistical tool for those who do not want to do programming much. It gives me something Iu can easily explain to and teacher other statistical users (e.g. hand in many papers with some regression analysis in it and team members who have no programming experience and do NOT want to learn much other than absolutely minimum and necessary; they are social scientists and that is it). I knew R, python, SPSS, SIR/DBMS and most of SAS all can do this. Frankly only SPSS they can use. And I believe they can use it after I am not in the picture anymore still. That is the use case of SPSS. There are more people in that hole than your think.
I thought the open source (in fact free source) started with printer driver ... It is always closed but you can hack it. As regards for the ink it is a different matter. Can you have open source printer but the ink is sort of close in some sense. You can open the source but not the keys I wonder.

Very interesting. But one of the problem is immigration. With open door policy that make USA great at the same time make the problem hard. But as long as it is hard to get there, the problem is not totally unsolved. Some sort of "control" is needed but not totally cut. That would be a universal problem as there would be rich-poor region forever. As said you can send people to the moon but never solve the problem of the poor. Not solved but should be handled. Could be handled. And even if not, we can try. But not unlimited immigration.

Do they follow basic PKI best practice. Do they actually know (not after the fact) the certification path validation algorithm. It shall be auto.
Is Firefox use the normal PKI authentication mechanism. Their reaction is like this is a surprise and even signing intermediate cert as the first step and instead of talking about bypass or hack the whole PKI trust chain.
Based on some of the comments here, I think one has to understand that it is not just timestamp and validity. The checking of PKI is per transaction and on a continuous basis. It is NOT just based on signing but also based on CRL (cert. revocation list) which is also key.

The title is a bit problematic though. What is meant by free and open if 1/5 of human beings are not allowed to read anything written in English be default. You may argue that is because of their government and people deserve ... But no. I blame it on Internet very design. We were told in 1990s that it is free and open. At worst the commence may have to be tolerant but we can at least offer ourselves and others may. That is within that context this article is. But what we have missed in this context the infrastructure of Internet is not free and open. It is in fact not just closed but a means to monitor every word without a chance to delete.
