I cannot work productively with Linux because there are no Linux alternatives to the following Windows tools (and the 'alternatives' people tell me about are a sad joke):
People get what they pay for. If you want industrial-strength stuff, you have to pay, a lot. People also forget or don't know how expensive things were back then.

What incentive do people have to invest years of their life to do this and then not get a dime back? There is a reason why most commercial software is better than their free, open-source counterparts.
If I understand correctly, the rats smell TNT? What are the problems in building artificial TNT detectors working like the olfactory systems of animals?
An "optical rotary encoder"? I doubt it. I bet it's a mechanical rotary encoder. And that it randomly jumps means their code for reading the encoder sucks. Something like that should not happen if properly implemented. I will take a rotary encoder over a potentiometer every time.
