Aha! I came across some odd Whiteclaw (alcohol) product placement on Unsplash, and I was wondering if “influencers” were trying to make a go of it on the platform, but that didn’t seem likely — now it all makes sense.

I don't think you can compare full-time employment with an hourly contract directly.

The rule of thumb I've heard a few people use to convert from employment to contract is to multiply your hourly employment earnings by 2.5 to arrive at your contract rate. By that math, you're still under-earning outside of the downtown core.

Mind you, I'm not sure that conversion has ever fully rung true to me, but the general point of not being able to directly compare still stands.

I fail to see how "per capita per square mile" is a useful measure.

_Anything_ measured in that way would show densely populated area vastly outnumbering rural areas, perhaps with the exclusion of things that essentially don't exist in cites, such as "number of farms per capita per square mile".

The measure appears to be concocted specifically for Lying With Statistics™.

I would further argue that tech jobs in Hamilton/Mississauga (or other satellite/burbs) don't compete with Toronto-proper in terms of compensation. Which leaves you with 1-2 hour commute each way just to try to save a bit on housing, and still not getting the benefit of properly compensated tech work.

This article seems to implicitly characterize it as a positive, but the lower cost of business in the Toronto tech scene is subsidized by low wages for tech workers.

As the article states, the talent and diversity of education is top-notch, but the compensation is yet to match—Toronto tech workers need to demand higher wages.

It's a bit disingenuous to list a bunch of languages (along with custom logo icons) that are _presumably_ supported by nanobox, only to force visitors to drill-down one-by-one to discover that only one out of three have any support at all, and the others are just placeholders saying "please contribute".

On the positive side, I guess it is better odds than a state lottery.

This is a horrible headline and directly promotes misunderstanding. One might even call it clickbait.

In reality, virtual currencies can now be exchanged tax-free, effectively putting them in-line with other currencies—no special status has been afforded specifically to Bitcoin that makes it some kind of tax shelter or similar. Capital gains and taxes while spending Bitcoins or real goods and services still apply as with any currency.

Depending on the age of the child in question, _all_ advertising may be inappropriate: children under ~7 tend to lack the executive function to differentiate between entertainment and advertising, and to reason about any agenda the advertiser might have.

Many television broadcast regulators limit the amount and type of advertising presented to children (including the very liberal FCC), and in some cases even prohibit such advertising altogether (e.g. the province of Quebec in Canada). So far, regulations have not caught up with the Youtube generation, even though many parents treat streaming media equivalently to broadcast in how it is used by their children.

Interesting... One further question: when does it recalibrate—is it opportunistically, when it is already running past the reflective strip (I'm guessing in-line with the black displaying), or every so often (after each image cycle)?

One workaround that could better hide the inaccuracy would have been to only have smooth colour transitions on the ribbons (including between black and white), as it appears to be a hard transition between blank and white that causes it to be so noticeable with the small positional error.
