I suspect that this can have something to do with designers thinking themselfs as kind of artists. Primadonnas do beautiful things and expect gratification for it.
I must say i have small but the same experience with asking for small help without keeping cash in other hand.

The only way you can force them to improve their products is by buying products of other brands. When they notice lower numbers in their spreasheets, they gonna do something. Either improve quality/increase innovation or drop the price. You benefit from both.
