I think the 'You're not helping' meme is pretty damn apropos here and I am a software engineer who happens to be female.
I'm not furious at her, because she's not high enough on my radar to actually incite 'fury', but I do think she's an idiot and that her actions are likely to cause the exact opposite response than the one she claims to have intended.
Oh and I also don't really find my field to be inherently sexist just because it's mostly men and there are a lot of dick jokes. I happen to like it that way, and much like every guy with some chops I've always been treated with respect due to my own abilities.
They do expect me to actually have ability to be part of the group, but that's hardly unreasonable.
If at the turn of the 20th century there had been an organization, say the BWAA (Buggy Whip Association of America), I'm sure that organization would've been lobbying for the exact same kind of anti-progress laws regarding the development of automobile technology.
The shame of it is that technological innovation could actually be used by the MPAA to produce things that people want to pay money for. Instead what we have is a bunch of soon-to-be fossils thinking that they will be the first people ever in the history of humans to successfully stand in the way of progress and not be steamrolled into oblivion.
She was 'directly involved' in the conversation in that she overheard it, and uninvited turned around to insert herself into it.
And that's from her own account of things, which should paint her in the most favorable light. Her story is that she inserted herself into someone else's conversation twice and therefor launched a Twitter campaign of public shaming and social justice.
I'm not about to apologize for the fact that I don't invite people into my circle of friends if I'm going to have to constantly be on guard to watch what I say around them in case some dick or fart joke offends them and they go running to HR to tattle on me.
I don't much care if that hypersensitive whinypants is male, female, or self identifying as a tree squirrel - I'm not going to spend every waking minute that I'm around other human beings moderating my every word like I'm on goddamn Sesame Street. If that wet-blanket who can't have fun doesn't get promoted because nobody actually likes being around them enough to want to spend 10 or more hours a day with them, it's not my problem and I'm not going to hold their hand and wipe their tears. They need to grow a thicker skin or learn to enjoy life outside the fold.

It sounds like a constant reminder that you're not really a part of the community because there's tech and then there's 'women in tech' - as if your plumbing has anything to do with being 'in tech'.
