One thing worth considering is the relationship between you two, mixing friendship and business relationships can in many ways destroy you both and whatever you're building. Be sure of your roles. Be very clear with what your roles are.

This reminds me of my Japanese classes in high school, my/our teacher had made his own litterature for the class and we constantly played our scenarios/theater/sketches. Trained Japanese "thinking", grammar, writing, talking, interacting.. all at the same time. Landed me at "little of everything".. I wish I paid more attention now!
Oh, I do not think the problem would be that the users are unaware of upvoting. Surely, about everyone (some excluded because everything is not always valid for everyone) would notice there's a clickable triangle next to the story title (Especially since there's just one(!)) - and most users should be coming from, or have visited another "social news board" with similar features previously.
Sometimes you simply do not like a story, article, linkpassing nearly enough to actually be thinking: "Hey, this was so interesting, that I am going to tell a really good friend about it - so he/she could enjoy it aswell!".
You bet half of the regular Hacker News readership does not know the frontpage is powered by voting.
I bet most of the fellow users have fairly or very high standards. Especially since there's so much quality content.

I didn't know what MSRP meant - so I looked it up and "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price" seemed to fit into the above comment. In case anyone else wonders.
I somehow think of the 'expressways' or whatever Isaac calls them in his book 'The Caves of Steel'. Basically just what you described, I think.
(They're some kind of walk-escalators that stretch all around towns, cross towns, cross land. Which you move onto the slower one, escalate your speed for the next strip, jump over to the next strip, etc. )
They don't let you actually delete your own account, but giving them a "written slip" via e-mail works - they'll remove your account. I'm not sure to what degree they remove stuff though. I think your profile is removed and your tags/links are void.
I've got friends who've mailed to [email protected] and gotten their accounts removed following. I'd be interested to hear if other people have had similar encounters.
It's more likely that the IP ranges he was connecting from was listed as coming from the United States rather than France in their or their providers geoinformation database.
I don't think they've ever had a special deal with any IP organisation in France, however - I might of course be totally wrong.
I'd rather have content than a graph. Comfortably I'd like both.
Graphs without much content, which is the leading combination these days - especially around "tech", business, economics sites/"content", is pretty damn annoying and it makes it feel a lot more cheap.
I do agree that a graph would be a nice complement. Even if the "problem with Linux/tech crowd" was pretty unnecessary.
I've heard it's nice, I think it's essential IE files and wine slapped into a pretty package - but I've also heard/seen that you can have several versions of IE for testing stuff out. Might.. be nice. I dunno.
I agree, but the "summarised" version at "The noisy channel" was alright and I didn't feel it was "blogspam". It felt like it helped get me interested to read more, the original article has quite some more text than the summary - might have put me off. This got me interested.
Firstly, thanks for posting this comment. It's got several interesting sides. It got me thinking about myself and everyone else in a way, I mean.. most of needs to fill 'that empty space' with something. Be it video games, programming, working 'til death, watching a lot of porn, smoke a lot of <favorite pipe filling>, drink oneself a sleep etc.
I'm not sure if I got a point to this comment, but I do feel quite 'small' in the "big whole" sometimes. And feel it's sad we all run our individual race from start to finish (more or less).
