What the article describes is gopherspace, which believe it or not still exists. And believe it or not, is experiencing a resurgence. It's too bad major browsers gave up on gopher:// because as we are seeing now in this and other laments for the old www, we lost something that we didnt have to lose.

I'm up against what I can only describe as "company spam."
Software company creates multiple llc's to market the same software product with slightly different names or names similar to legit companies. It works like a charm to clog up Google results. And if one gets dinged by Google, just crank up another company with a "headquarters" in Nevada.
At least the kind Indian person on the telephone assures me otherwise. It's too bad that Google doesn't share the sentiment of their Indian employees who are at least feigning helpfulness.
Adwords banned my site for a page that was not being advertised in Adwords.
It appears what you need to do today to be safe is have a landing page on a completely unique site, without hyperlinks going anywhere else. Or maybe, send people to Google Shopping. That's probably what this is all about.

Good info on how to respond to a negative SEO attack. You can buy 100,000 bad links for $5 bucks on Fiverr and point them anywhere. Really pisses me off how Google has spawned this negative seo market, and how they expect the victim to clean up Google's mess.
I don't think pushed hard enough for the adoption of TLS. It's only finally THIS YEAR that they made available their ubiquitous AdSense code for SSL/TSL. Because many websites derive their full livelihood from AdSense, Google has effectively been stalling the widespread adoption of SSL on the web. If you were a news website and you used AdSense, then forget about ever implementing SSL; it would kill our site.
Although I'm glad they have finally started serving AdSense in SSL, Google need to take ownership in their big role in keeping the internet unencrypted. If they have had a had a change of heart, that's great. But I don't trust them any more.
I am stuck with windows for now because we develop Windows software. But I have Virtual Box image of Ubuntu on this machine, which I use for web surfing and al manner of other activities. I just prefer Ubuntu. After having reformatted my Windows machine last week because of a bad virus infection, I have decided to do all of my web surfing on Ubuntu..

What you're confused about is that you equate being at work with working. I hate to break it to you, but none of your 1000 employees are not working at 100 capacity, even if you can see that they are sitting in their ugly little cubicle. It doens't mean they're working, or that they're productive.
Thanks to Yahoo's crackdown, I think working at home has gotten a bum rap lately. I work at home, and so do my 4 employees. It can let you build a great a lifestyle, and help small businesses hire talent where ever they can find it.
In my case, I traded the city for a modest home on a beautiful lake in rural Minnesota. It also lets me be near my autistic son who attends online public school (school at home is another digression, but off topic).

All kidding aside, working at home is tool that great companies with great employees can wield effectively to obtain excellent results and acquire talent they can't find locally. Companies, like Yahoo, that don't understand this are not great companies and probably never will be.
