100%. we had a tight knit community and no one would dare do an airbnb. but once they got a foothold, and airbnb lawyers started threatening our council (or buying them) we know have 12 in a 2 block radius, direct home sales to out of town investors making airbnb (aka hotels). we lost the battle as the community is now not tight knit, and more people selling to leave
maybe instead of hipster dotcom moving everywhere in hoards, they could just use their smug talents, intelligence and rsu wealth to start building their own towns?
i mean, how many googlers and facebook engineers would it take to build a small, cool, hip town, with $20 grilled cheese and artisan everything?
maybe they want to avoid dealing with folks with aggressive attitudes like yours, and find life more pleasant dealing with more rational, level headed people or no one.
it is amazing to me that after 20 years of doing this, and endless river of new “tools” to help, it has become a labyrinth of config files, aws, IAM, deploy complexity and unenjoyable “stuff”.
i feel like i used to “build things” to solve problems. now it’s just unwind a bunch of complexity for the sake of complexity
take away: it’s easy to be happy with lots of money, but harder to not blow your life on drugs, and bad choices, no matter how “nice of a person” you appear to be on the outside.
A little over a year ago, while working at Google I needed to work from home for personal reasons. HR told me “we have done extensive studies and it doesn’t work so take a personal leave”. Okay. In another issue I suggested to my manager we stop using “blacklist” and “whitelist”. He said no one else had a problem with those names and of this was a personal issue take it up with HR
Google will never change unless forced to. I quit soon after.
