It’s called craquelure. (Forgive my short explanation. I have to get up in 4 hours.) In addition to applying thick layers of paint Rembrandt used varnish. All of this dries at different times, which leads to the cracking effect. It’s more a condition of how it was painted and the media the artists used and less about trying to achieve the effect outright.

Fun fact: the Night Watch is an inaccurate title. The title is actually Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq or The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch. It’s known as the Night Watch because of dirt and varnish—the varnish yellows over time. This changed after extensive restoration. Also, the painting has been vandalized several times. In one unfortunate event in the ‘70s a person took a knife to it.
I’m a cultural historian and professor. My early work was on the development of video synthesizers by artists, engineers, educators, and technologists—mainly for non-commercial and artistic purposes. I visited HN for a decade before creating an account. Now, I find thoughtful and engaging conversations on HN. It reminds me that while many of us do not work in the same profession/field, the inquisitive nature of the posts and comments speak to our common interests and curiosity. I also get to learn from amazing people who have played a part in pioneering their fields respectively.
I can speak to both. But, for me, Prednisone was the hardest to break; I took Prednisone for more than 10 years with very high doses first and slowly tampering off. It saved my life and, yes, it worked wonders. On very high doses I was on the top of the world—euphoria. But once the tampering started, that’s when the negative side effects came: sleepless, agitation, restlessness, depression, mood swings, and much more. My doctor mentioned that with its benefits she could list a side effect from A to Z. You have one year one me, but I too get to celebrate being Prednisone free.
Over the River was one of many projects that Christo was deeply passionate about. When I spoke to him about the project six years ago he was still hopeful about it; it had been a non-realized project started with Jeanne-Claude. And he spoke of finishing their vision even after her passing, which seemed to affect him greatly. I am saddened of his passing.
I know that this is more of an announcement of the recognition of the misattribution of an artifact in the museum’s collection, but I am more curious of it’s provenance; specifically, how it made its way into the museum’s collection. And what its original archaeological context was.
I have been thinking about this for a week while monitoring travel alerts. I have two business trips scheduled—-one in May and the other in June. My employer just canceled my May trip today and I feel that the same is going to happen for June. While I can always reschedule, I fear that my colleagues and friends in Italy, whose families depend on visitors during the months of May and June, will not recover from this.
I’ve only ever cooked the store bought beyond burgers and prefer grilling them. minor adjustments in cooking technique can produce both red-in-the-middle and well done versions. I don’t care for the pan fryed version as it crusts and sometimes burns a little if left on one side too long.
