I have no productive words to share other than positive feelings and kind empathy to you @sberens. I've gone through this manufacturing route in China before about 10 years ago and...it has largely been the same. Even with near native fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese did not spare me from this experience. Indeed it is. I too thought that perhaps it was a scam. But the call was followed up by an email from business.fb.com and per their Help Center, it is indeed from Meta

I'm not sure what's evoking more emotion in me now because of the comments here: Me being angry at the fact that many comments show an inherent but unconscious racism or Me resigned to the fact that despite the educated and 'informed' discussion, there are HN commentators reducing discrimination to a data collection/flaw-in-the-study argument.
Multiple people in my last organization fit this bill. Worse, these bad actors are somehow able to leverage their incompetency to be branded as 'thought leaders' themselves. Its comically impressive...

Fair point, though there's no way that her site would have taken off without the misleading blurb. In an essentially culturally Confucian China, the task of naming a child is commonly relegated to the most senior/elderly person in the family, then education, then preference. No matter how well marketed the site may be, its doubtful it would have taken off if she stated her age honestly.

I would be cautious with Cal Newport's books and take it with a box of salt, however. To be fair, I only read one of his books (So Good They Can't Ignore You). His intentions with framing the book and its details are great. But I found it hard to trust that he actually believes in some of the things he writes - as opposed to just writing books that can sell well

I slowly saw all of my Samsung-fan co-workers/partners transition to iPhones or atleast other Androids during my 2 year stay in Beijing. Ancedotal evidence at best but the quality of their phones and the software was subpar. I've had my Galaxy S2 for four years and only had to replace it last week. But their Samsung phones seemed extremely glitchy, would freeze at the most inappropriate times and have random battery issues.
I visited this Bakery twice - once to potentially buy bulk, another time as part of a business case study. All the employees, atleast the ones I observed working the floor, were all happy and smiling. Good for them.
Having worked and traveled extensively in China, I couldn't find a single person that had good things to say about Xiaomi, other than its price. Western media seems to be fixated on this company but I've asked so many Chinese nationals what they thought of it, why they do[n't] have it, etc. All of them said that it constantly froze, dropped calls, etc. Almost always, they have a Xiaomi only as a temporary phone before they upgrade to a Samsung, iPhone, or other

Books that I'd recommend: Anything by Peter Drucker, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni, Made to Stick by the Heath Brothers, Blue Ocean Strategy by Kim and Mauborgne, among others. I'm sure plenty others here will also give you other recommendations that seem more 'start-up' like too.
