On site disaster recovery? Off site disaster recovery? Split your hosting between multiple providers?
It really depends on how much risk you're willing to accept, and how much that is worth to you. It can be quantified via revenue lost, but reputation is much harder to put a number on.
Issues? I find that Commission Junction affiliates can't even get their links right all the time which is basically their entire business. Talk about a "shotgun" approach...
The author suggests that Google has a unified product vision; I'd love to hear what it is. To me, Google has been all over the place in the last 5 years.
RIM will remain the choice of companies and governments strictly due to BES; no other OS offers such direct central control over the users' devices. Companies (mine in particular) are struggling to cope with Apple and Android devices in the enterprise, and Windows Phone 7 only slighty better.
"right click -> Copy As PlainText"? Office 2010 still doesn't ship with such a feature, and it's been a problem from the '90s!"
Have you used Office 2010? There are multiple options to pasting: Keep source formatting, merge formatting, and keep text only. The options in Excel are even greater.
I'm glad the author mentioned Project Euler... I've never heard of it. Anyone else have experience with these problems? Is it a good way to improve your development skills?
What's wrong with "Thanks for your time and allowing me to discuss product x with you. Is there any reason why you think this wouldn't be a good fit for your problem y? I want your business, and I look forward to working with you further."
I don't disagree with you that the numbers may be off, but consider the fact that the compressors in an A/C unit don't have to work as hard if the heat exchange is more efficient. That's saving electricity from the cooling fan AND the compressor.
I don't feel like you're adding a lot to the discussion by stereotyping and calling out "business guys". As a comparitively non-technical person to the average hacker news user, I would expect Amazon to quickly and clearly communicate to me why they are unable to provide the contracted service, what they are doing to remedy the issue, when it will be returned, and what we can do to avoid a similar outage in the future. From there, I can determine my risk aversion and the oppurtunity cost of choosing such a solution.
From what I gather, this is not how it was handled (I may be wrong), and for that I could not put my trust in them.
It sounds like to me that they expect to process in total 40 million during Q1, but they could process up to 1 million in a single day? Clarification would be nice in the article

This is a story about Tory and the leaky canoe. Tory loves rowing her canoe in the pond (while wearing a certified floatation device and carrying the proper safety whistle, of course), and she rows at least 2 hours a day. Unfortunately, today Tory found 2 large holes in the bottom of her 200 gallon, 60 pound canoe, and she's afraid she won't be able to row for the day. Assuming the two holes in the canoe are approximately 2 inches in diameter, and Tory weighs 75 pounds, how long will Tory be able to row before she has to utilize her safety whistle and flotation device?
Tory is paddling in fresh water, and her force is distributed equally between the two holes.
You know, just a run-of-the-mill math question for a 3rd grader...
