This comment contradicts PG's theory that hackers can learn what people want. I agree with PG, and this exercise would help us, not only think more forward, but to think in terms of what everyone wants, not just hackers.
In response to the other comments, the article would have to have a special title, so people would know to reply with only solutions. And I think it would get a greater response if it was posted by PG on a limited basis X once a week.
Starting a company is similar to starting a band. Sometimes a group of friends can start jamming together, and very quickly they begin to make music people love. Other times producers and managers need to match talent, as was the case with The Temptations.
PG is in a position to match talent just as Berry Gordy of Motown was. If he does he may see more hit songs... I mean successful companies.
Tell that big company, with that cool project, you changed your mind X commit your life to startups X and move back to SF. If you don't you are going to lose that unusable VIP pass to her pants ; )

Some people are motivated by what money can buy others are motivated by the freedom it can bring. Someone motivated by freedom will put in just as good an effort as someone motivated by material wealth. The bottom line is that you are motivated.
Nothing succeeds like a working demo, so find a galvanizing event =YC DEMO DAY= that forces you to get a prototype built. Otherwise you will think about it to much.
There are customers that everyone else will follow zero in on them.
