Autonomous cars will no doubt become more common in the next few years. But for self-driving cars to become the norm, a lot of industries will have to be completely changed.
And with the way lobbying works nowadays in the US, I doubt we'll see any changes anytime soon.
Go to conferences where you can meet like-minded individuals, with skills to compliment your weaknesses. Being able to get along and trust each others' opinions are the most important criteria IMO (aside from being technically competent).
