This is exactly the same thing Opera Mini is doing. Nothing shocking. The only (but crucial) difference is that Opera Mini is more transparent about it for the user (it explicitly warns the user when he's trying to access HTTPS sites), I bet Nokia will start do the same.
Not sure why people downvote this, it describes the real value that facebook has for most of its users (I think): it makes it easy to stay in contact with their friends, check what happens to distant family members on the other side of the continent or put online photos from the last holiday trip, etc. etc. and also have of all of that archived in one place for years.
The problem with that is that most of the time not that much happens in people's lifes so it's hard to keep users online for very long (read: generate money). Thus FB gradually converts itself into a poor man's version of twitter.

Well, I'm from Germany but working in Spain - regularly getting job offers from UK, Ireland, Germany, even San Francisco, with 2, 3, 4 times bigger salaries. But still: weather, food, people and yes, "quality of life" - those things are keeping me here. Recently visited Porto, and damn, that place is so fantastic that I started to think about moving in there. Because, pardon being a bit cheesy here, life is more than having a good salary, a house and drink a pint of Guinness in a local bar on a Friday night. At least for me, that is.
According to this text: http://prawo.vagla.pl/node/9637 (in Polish, from a lawyer who is against ACTA), there was no real attack on any of the mentioned sites, it was just that there was so much interest in the case that some sites went down due to naturally increased traffic. Case in point: his own website went down, even though he is against ACTA.
They fought hard with the police and caused some real damage to some of the government buildings, but there was no kidnapping, or terror. Poland is not some wild, crazy country.
Also, most of the society was against the protests and was literally pissed off on miners and on government (for the fact that they indeed agreed to most of the requests of the miners).
1) think the differences between those shells are much bigger than between Luna and classic in XP
2) that it's a different shell, not a fully different desktop environment isn't really that important, for a normal user it will already cause confusion (maybe even more as it requires additional explanation what's the difference between the two).
Don't get me wrong: the thing that you have a choice is one of the virtues of Linux, but at the same time what it causes is that:
a) Linux is doomed to fail on a mainstream desktop market
b) none of the available choices is and probably will never be as polished as commercial competitors (and fragmentation is one of the reasons of that)
No, it's not faster now and it's no longer really used probably (don't know if smartphones, tablets, various consoles, etc. offer access to any equivalent of rsqrtps), but it was brilliant at its time (well, still is, it's just not very useful).

The origin of PD comes from Russia and AFAIK they have this tradition (inherited from the times of communism) there to celebrate professions with a special day dedicated to them, so yes, they do have firemen day, miner day or policemen day.
Recent major change was the photo page redesign done this year no? (or was it last year?), and that redesign is good.
About the 1st point: totally agree. I use flickr to look for a good pictures and from time to time to post some of mine that are reasonably OK - for me it's not, and never has been, a site to post photos from last night's bash or socialize with people, that's what Facebook is for (and maybe G+ will be someday in the future (but it won't come easy for them)).
I also don't need the site to change every 6 months - if it works OK (and flickr works OK for me) then changing it is not really necessary (or at least, not that important).
